Chapter 4 - Breakfast with the Dead

The long mahogany dining table was laid out with immaculate silver service. Freshly baked brioche, smoked salmon, poached eggs, and carafes of fresh orange juice sat on white linen tablecloths.
Rocco sat at the head of the table, cutting his steak with precise, rhythmic movements.
To his right sat Sophia, sitting atop two thick leather cushions so she could reach the table. She was happily eating a Belgian waffle loaded with whipped cream and strawberries, completely oblivious to the terror radiating from the men around her. Beside her sat Mariah, watching her daughter with a mixture of immense pride and paralyzing fear.
To Rocco’s left sat Carmine Moretti and Vincent Moretti.
Neither of them had touched their food. Vincent’s cuffed hands were resting awkwardly under a napkin on his lap, while Carmine sat frozen, staring at the small, clear glass bottle that Rocco had placed directly in the center of the table.
It was the poisoned pill bottle.
Beside it lay a sleek black laptop computer, its screen glowing softly. On the line via encrypted video conference were three men—the heads of the remaining major Families of the Commission: Don Falcone from Brooklyn, Don Maranzano from Queens, and Don Genovese from Staten Island.
"Rocco," Don Falcone’s voice came through the high-end speakers, crisp and clear. "Carmine called us two days ago. He showed us medical reports signed by Dr. Voss claiming you were non-compos mentis. He claimed you were losing control of the docks and the union funds."
Rocco wiped his mouth with a linen napkin, looking calmly into the webcam.
"Carmine lied to you, Falcone," Rocco said evenly. "Just as he lied to my nephew. Dr. Voss was paid two million dollars into a Swiss account—funds wired directly from a dummy corporation owned by Carmine’s Newark operation."
Rocco tapped a key on the laptop.
On the shared screen across the tri-state network, a series of financial documents appeared—bank records, wire transfers, and encrypted chat logs retrieved forty minutes ago by Rocco’s cyber security team from Dr. Voss’s personal laptop in the basement.
The evidence was undeniable.
Don Maranzano cleared his throat over the speaker. "Carmine... is this true?"
Carmine looked at the glowing laptop screen, his face gray. "They... they were forcing our hand! Rocco was refusing to expand our revenue! The Commission was losing ground!"
"You poisoned a Boss of the Commission, Carmine," Don Genovese spat from Staten Island, his voice filled with absolute disgust. "You used a coward’s weapon. You used drugs and corrupt doctors. That is a violation of the First Code."
"And you tried to use the federal courts to strip my legacy," Rocco added softly, leaning forward into the camera. "If a Don can be declared insane by his own relatives using dirty pills and bought judges, then none of you are safe in your own beds. Any ambitious nephew can buy a doctor and take your chair."
A heavy, terrifying silence fell across the line.
The three Bosses on the screen understood the implications perfectly. The precedent Carmine was trying to set was a threat to every single elder in the syndicate.
"What is your judgment, Don Bellavita?" Don Falcone asked formally. "The Commission recognizes your full authority over the Newark territory and the Moretti crew."
Rocco looked at Carmine, then at Vincent.
"The Newark territory is hereby annexed into the Bellavita direct estate," Rocco declared, his voice echoing with absolute finality. "Carmine Moretti and Vincent Moretti are stripped of all rank, all assets, and all protection."
Carmine collapsed back into his chair, his eyes wide and vacant. In their world, being stripped of protection was a death sentence.
"And the court petition at ten o'clock?" Don Maranzano asked.
"I will attend the hearing personally," Rocco smiled grimly. "With my nephew Vincent as my primary witness. He will testify to the judge that the petition was a fraudulent scheme created by Dr. Voss, who has conveniently resigned his medical license and fled the country."
"And the child?" Don Falcone asked, catching sight of little Sophia on the corner of the camera feed, eating her strawberries.
Rocco looked down at Sophia. The little girl looked up, wiping a small smear of whipped cream from her nose with her napkin.
"This child saved my life," Rocco said, his voice echoing across the encrypted line. "As of today, Sophia Carter and her mother, Mariah Carter, are under the personal, permanent protection of the Bellavita family. Anyone who steps within ten feet of them without my permission answers to Dante."

Sophia smiled sweetly at Rocco. "Thank you, Mr. Rocco. Can I have another waffle?"
Rocco’s face softened into a genuine, warm smile. "You can have the whole bakery, little one."
