Chapter 6 - The Maid’s New Kingdom

By 2:00 PM, the storm had passed.
The news outlets were running retraction stories, declaring that the rumors of Rocco Bellavita’s illness were nothing more than a failed corporate extortion attempt by corrupt medical professionals.
In Newark, Carmine Moretti’s lieutenants had surrendered their keys, ledgers, and territories to Dante without a single shot being fired. Carmine himself had been placed on a flight to a remote villa in South America, stripped of every cent of his fortune.
Back at the Bellavita mansion, the atmosphere had completely shifted.
In the sunlit glass conservatory off the main garden, a brand-new wooden desk had been installed.
Mariah Carter sat behind it, wearing a elegant beige linen suit that Rocco’s personal tailor had delivered two hours ago. She was no longer wearing a maid’s uniform.
On her desk stood a new silver plaque:
MARIAH CARTER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE BELLAVITA FAMILY FOUNDATION
Sitting on the soft plush rug beside her desk was Sophia, wearing a brand-new pink dress, happily playing with a massive, high-end dollhouse that Rocco had ordered from FAO Schwarz in Manhattan.
The glass door opened, and Rocco stepped inside, holding a small silver box tied with a red silk ribbon.
Mariah stood up instantly, her hands trembling slightly. "Don Bellavita..."
"Mariah, please," Rocco smiled gently, gesturing for her to sit back down. "In this room, you don't call me Don. You call me Rocco."
Mariah swallowed hard, tears welling up in her eyes. "I still can't believe this is real. This morning I was sweeping floors, terrified that Sophia would be punished for touching your things..."
"Your daughter didn't just touch my things, Mariah," Rocco said, walking over to the desk and setting the silver box down. "She saved my life. She showed more courage, sharp observation, and loyalty in thirty seconds than men I’ve known for thirty years."
He pushed the silver box toward her. "Open it."
Mariah carefully untied the ribbon and lifted the velvet lid.
Inside lay a set of golden keys and a legal deed printed on heavy parchment.
"What... what is this?" Mariah asked, reading the address on the deed.
"That is the deed to a five-acre estate four miles down the road," Rocco explained smoothly. "It has six bedrooms, a swimming pool, a private garden, and a trust fund attached that covers Sophia’s education all the way through medical school or law school—whichever she chooses."
Mariah gasped, covering her mouth with her hands, tears spilling over her cheeks. "Rocco... no... this is too much! We can't accept this!"
"You can, and you will," Rocco said, his voice dropping into that quiet, absolute tone that allowed no argument. "You are no longer a servant in this house, Mariah. You are the Director of my foundation. You will oversee twenty million dollars a year in charitable grants for orphans, single mothers, and children’s hospitals across the state."
Sophia dropped her doll and ran over, wrapping her small arms around Rocco’s knee.
"Thank you, Mr. Rocco!" she chirped happily.

Rocco reached down, easily lifting the five-year-old up into his arms, resting her against his broad shoulder.
"No, Sophia," Rocco smiled, his dark eyes sparkling with a warmth the criminal underworld had never seen. "Thank you."
