Chapter 5 - The District 4 Ambush

At 9:45 AM, a fleet of six armored black SUVs pulled up to the front steps of the District 4 State Courthouse in downtown Manhattan.
Reporters, court photographers, and legal observers were gathered on the granite steps. Rumors had been leaking since midnight that a major mob boss was about to be stripped of his empire under emergency mental health laws.
The door of the center SUV opened.
Rocco Bellavita stepped out into the bright morning sunlight. He was flanked by Dante, four armed guards, and his lead defense attorney, Marcus Vance—a legal shark who charged a thousand dollars an hour.
Walking directly beside Rocco, looking like a man marching toward his own execution, was Vincent Moretti.
Camera flashes exploded across the steps like lightning bolts.
"Mr. Bellavita! Are the rumors true?" a reporter shouted, pushing a microphone forward. "Are you stepping down due to health reasons?"
"Mr. Bellavita! Is Don Carmine taking over the Newark operations?"
Rocco paused on the top step, turning to face the wall of cameras. He adjusted his dark sunglasses, looking every inch the king of the city.
"I have never felt better in my life," Rocco announced smoothly into the microphones. "I’m simply here today to assist the District Attorney in closing a small matter of medical fraud."
Inside Courtroom 302, Judge Arthur Pendelton sat behind the high wooden bench.
Pendelton was an ambitious judge who had received substantial political donations from Carmine Moretti’s shell companies over the last five years. He was expecting a quick, quiet fifteen-minute hearing where Vincent Moretti would present the signed affidavits from Dr. Voss, and Pendelton would sign the order placing Rocco into custody.
When the heavy doors of the courtroom swung open, Judge Pendelton looked up, expecting to see a wheelchair.
Instead, Rocco walked in, his broad chest out, accompanied by his top legal team.
Judge Pendelton’s gavel hovered in mid-air. "Mr... Mr. Bellavita. I did not expect you to attend in person."
"I wouldn't miss it for the world, Your Honor," Rocco said, taking a seat at the defense table.
Marcus Vance stood up, opening a sleek leather briefcase. "Your Honor, we are here regarding the fraudulent petition filed under index number 4409-B. We wish to inform the court that the petition is being formally withdrawn by the petitioner, Mr. Vincent Moretti."
Judge Pendelton blinked, looking nervously at Vincent, who stood at the podium looking gray and sick.
"Is this true, Mr. Moretti?" the judge asked sharply. "You signed a sworn statement claiming your uncle was violently delusional."
Vincent swallowed hard. He looked back at Rocco, who was calmly sitting at the table, tapping his gold signet ring against his knee. In the front row of the gallery sat Dante, his massive hands folded over a thick manila envelope labeled JUDGE PENDELTON - OFFSHORE ACCOUNTS.
Vincent knew that if he stuck to the plan, Dante would leak those offshore bank records to the FBI before noon.
"I... I was mistaken, Your Honor," Vincent stammered, his voice shaking. "The medical reports provided by Dr. Voss were... fabricated. My uncle is in complete mental and physical health. I apologize to the court for wasting its time."
Judge Pendelton’s face went white. He looked at the manila envelope in Dante’s hands, understanding instantly that the trap had snapped shut on his own neck.
"Case dismissed with prejudice!" Judge Pendelton declared rapidly, slamming his gavel down with frantic force. "The court orders an immediate investigation into Dr. Elias Voss for perjury and medical fraud!"
Rocco stood up slowly, buttoning his suit jacket. He looked up at the judge, bowing his head slightly in a cold, mocking gesture of respect.
"Thank you, Your Honor," Rocco said smoothly. "Have a wonderful day."
As Rocco turned and walked down the center aisle of the courtroom, Vincent took two steps toward him, his voice cracking with desperation. "Uncle Rocco... I did what you wanted. I withdrew the petition. What happens to me now?"
Rocco stopped at the courtroom doors. He didn't turn around.

"You’re going on a long vacation, Vincent," Rocco whispered, his voice barely audible over the chatter of the gallery. "To our olive groves in Sicily. You will stay there. You will never set foot in America again. And if you ever speak my name... Dante will visit you."
Without waiting for a response, Rocco pushed open the heavy oak doors and stepped out into the hallway, leaving his nephew crying quietly against the wooden barrier.
