Chapter 1 - The Blood Lineage

The gold button glistened in Lily’s small palm. Alessandro reached out, his thick, scarred fingers surprisingly delicate as he touched the tiny metal disc. He didn't take it; he simply held his hand beneath hers, letting the child decide if she wanted to let it go.
"Where did you find this, small one?" Alessandro asked. His voice was a low, resonant rumble that seemed to vibrating through the cold marble floor. It was a voice usually reserved for courtroom commands or whispered threats in shadowy backrooms, but now it held a quiet, trembling reverence.
Lily didn't shrink away. She looked straight into his dark eyes—eyes that mirrored her own—and pressed the button into his hand. "Under the table. It was hiding."
Alessandro closed his fingers over the brass disc. His mind raced back twenty-four years to a rain-slicked driveway in Naples. His mother, Elena, had worn a dark velvet coat the night she vanished. It had heavy, hand-carved gold buttons exactly like this one—a custom design crafted by an old artisan in Florence. One had been missing when they pulled her coat from the river.
"Alessandro!" Isabella snapped, her voice high and sharp, though a flicker of genuine unease crossed her face. She took two steps forward, the silk of her robe rustling loudly in the tense silence. "Are you seriously kneeling in front of the help? The girl stole that from my antique jewelry box! She’s a thief, just like her mother!"
Alessandro didn't stand up immediately. He slowly closed his eyes, taking a long, measured breath. When he opened them, the warmth he had shown the little girl vanished completely. He stood to his full six-foot-two height, turning his gaze toward his fiancée.
"Rosa," Alessandro said quietly, without looking back at the kneeling woman. "Take Lily to my private study on the third floor. Bruno, escort them up and ensure they have breakfast."
"Alessandro, no!" Isabella shrieked. "You don't send domestic staff into your private quarters! I want them off the property now!"
"Mr. Bruno," Alessandro repeated, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that froze the air in the hallway. "Do as I said."
The old butler bowed his head instantly. "Right away, Don Moretti." He gently ushered Rosa and the bewildered child toward the private elevator at the end of the hall. Rosa looked back at Alessandro once, her eyes wide with terror and something else—a silent, desperate plea that Alessandro registered instantly.
Once the elevator doors closed, Alessandro turned his full attention to Isabella.
Isabella Romano was the daughter of Senator Anthony Romano, a man whose political leverage had protected the Moretti shipping docks for a decade. The engagement had been a calculated business arrangement—a union of political immunity and criminal capital. For six months, Alessandro had tolerated her vanity, her arrogance, and her coldness toward the staff. But this morning, a line had been crossed that could never be uncrossed.
"You yelled in my house," Alessandro said smoothly, adjusting the cuff of his charcoal shirt.
"I was enforcing discipline!" Isabella argued, folding her arms. "That woman has been acting suspicious for weeks. And that brat was wandering into my dressing room—"
"This is not your house," Alessandro interrupted softly. "And that child was holding my mother’s button."
Isabella froze. "What?"
Alessandro pulled the button from his pocket, holding it between his thumb and forefinger. "My mother lost this twenty-four years ago. It was not in your jewelry box, Isabella. It was beneath the floorboards near the west wing console—a console that hasn't been moved since my father died."
He stepped closer to her. Isabella instinctively took a step back, her high heel catching on the edge of the rug.
"Why were you searching the west wing yesterday?" Alessandro asked. "That wing has been locked since I took over the family."
"I... I wasn't!" Isabella stammered, her green eyes darting toward the two security guards standing near the front door. "I was just looking for the estate manager! Alessandro, you are letting a maid drive a wedge between us! We are getting married in two months!"
Alessandro reached out, his thumb lightly brushing the massive diamond sitting on her left ring finger. Isabella breathed a subtle sigh of relief, thinking he was calming down.
Then Alessandro slipped the ring off her finger.
"The wedding is canceled," he said quietly.
"You can't do this!" Isabella screamed, her face flushed with fury and embarrassment. "My father will destroy your port contracts by noon! You need the Romano family!"
"Your father exists because I allow him to breathe," Alessandro replied smoothly, dropping the multi-million-dollar diamond into his shirt pocket like a loose coin. "Marco! Gianni!"
The two heavy-set guards stepped forward immediately. "Yes, Don Moretti?"
"Escort Miss Romano to her car. Ensure she takes only what she arrived with. If she sets foot on Moretti land again, shoot her."

"Alessandro!" Isabella gasped as Marco grabbed her upper arm with a firm, unyielding grip. "You're insane! You're ruining everything over a maid!"
As her screams echoed down the long marble driveway, Alessandro turned toward the grand staircase. He looked down at the tiny gold button in his hand, feeling the heavy, undeniable pull of blood calling to blood.
