Chapter 7 - The Shadow's Last Stand

The peace, however, was not meant to last without one final trial.

In early May, the trial of Anthony Romano reached its climax. Deprived of his political power, facing life in prison for murder and high treason, Romano had grown desperate. From his high-security jail cell, he used his remaining hidden offshore funds to hire a notorious crew of mercenaries—men from the old Sicilian syndicates who owed no allegiance to Alessandro Moretti.

Their objective was simple: strike at Alessandro’s heart by taking Rosa and Lily hostage to force Alessandro to drop his testimonies and release the offshore bank keys.

It happened on a foggy Tuesday afternoon.

Rosa and Lily were returning from a visit to the city's botanical gardens in a black armored SUV, escorted by Matteo and two senior Moretti bodyguards. As the vehicle reached the secluded, wooded drive leading to the Moretti estate, a heavy construction truck suddenly pulled out from a side road, slamming violently into the front of the SUV.

The impact sent the SUV spinning into the trees, its airbags deploying with a deafening bang.

Before Matteo could draw his weapon, four masked men in tactical gear swarmed the wreckage, firing automatic weapons into the engine block to disable it completely. They tore open the rear doors, grabbing a dazed Rosa and screaming Lily from the backseat.

"Get them in the van! Move!" the lead mercenary barked.

Matteo, bleeding from a gash on his forehead, kicked his door open, firing his pistol and dropping one mercenary instantly. "Rosa! Run!"

Rosa didn't hesitate. Driven by pure maternal instinct, she grabbed Lily from the mercenary’s grip, bit the man's wrist violently, and bolted into the thick, foggy woods bordering the estate.

"Get the girl!" the lead mercenary shouted, pursuing them into the trees with three armed men.

Rosa ran faster than she ever had in her life. Branches whipped against her face, tearing her dress and cutting her skin, but she held Lily tightly against her chest, her heart pounding like a war drum in her ears.

Behind her, the sound of heavy boots crunching through dried leaves drew closer.

"In here!" Rosa whispered frantically, ducking behind the massive, hollowed trunk of an ancient oak tree near the estate’s boundary stone.

She squeezed herself into the shadows, covering Lily’s mouth with her trembling hand. "Shh, my sweet baby... stay quiet... please, God, stay quiet..."

Lily nodded, her dark eyes wide with terror, but she didn't make a single sound. She squeezed her small eyes shut and held her breath.

The boots stopped just five feet away.

"Search the bushes!" a guttural voice barked through a radio. "The boss wants the kid alive, but he didn't say anything about the woman!"

Rosa closed her eyes, praying silently, feeling the cold steel of a heavy silver key—the key Alessandro had given her back—pressed against her chest.

Suddenly, a terrifying, unnatural silence fell over the woods.

The sound of the wind through the trees seemed to stop.

Then came a sharp, sickening CRACK.

A heavy body dropped into the wet leaves with a dull thud.

"What the—" another mercenary shouted, turning around, raising his rifle.

Before he could pull the trigger, a dark figure emerged from the fog like a vengeful shadow. Alessandro stepped forward, his face an unreadable mask of lethal rage. He caught the mercenary’s rifle with his bare hand, shoved it aside, and drove a combat blade directly into the man’s tactical vest.

The remaining two mercenaries scrambled back, panic seizing them as they tried to aim through the thick mist.

"Dante Moretti!" one screamed.

Alessandro didn't speak. He moved with terrifying, mechanical efficiency. Backed by Matteo and six Moretti enforcers who swarmed the woods from all directions, the ambush was dismantled in less than two minutes.

When the last mercenary fell, the woods returned to absolute silence, save for the dripping of wet fog from the leaves.

Alessandro dropped his blade, his chest heaving, his dark wool suit spattered with rain and dirt.

"Rosa!" his voice echoed through the trees, raw and frantic. "ROSA!"

From behind the hollow oak, a small figure stepped out into the misty light.

Rosa stumbled forward, her dress torn, her face bruised, but her arms still locked firmly around Lily.

Alessandro sprinted across the clearing, dropping to his knees on the wet earth, pulling both of them into a fierce, desperate embrace. He buried his face in Rosa’s hair, his heavy frame shaking with an emotion he had never shown a living soul.

"I have you," Alessandro choked out, holding them so tightly they could hear his roaring heartbeat. "I have you... you're safe..."

May you like

Lily reached out with her small hand, her fingers gently touching Alessandro’s bruised cheek. "Don't cry, Don," she whispered softly. "The bad men went away."

Alessandro pulled back, looking at the little girl, then at Rosa, and let out a breathless, joyful laugh through his tears.
