Chapter 8 - The Verdict of the City

The botched kidnapping attempt was the final nail in the coffin for Anthony Romano and his remaining empire.
Within forty-eight hours, federal authorities, backed by undeniable physical evidence provided by Alessandro’s intelligence network, seized every asset associated with the Romano estate. Anthony Romano was transferred to a maximum-security federal facility in Colorado, where he was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
The Romano name was erased from New York's political registry, replaced by a sweeping investigation into municipal corruption that cleared the city's docks of illegal syndicates once and for all.
In late June, a grand banquet was held at the historic Plaza Hotel in Manhattan.
It was an event that brought together the city’s highest society—district attorneys, supreme court justices, hotel tycoons, and international diplomats. But the centerpiece of the evening was not politics; it was the formal announcement of the unification of the Moretti and Mendez estates.
The grand ballroom was illuminated by thousands of crystal chandeliers, filled with the soft music of a live orchestra and the hum of refined conversation.
Alessandro Moretti stood near the central balcony, wearing a sharp, custom midnight-blue tuxedo. Beside him stood Rosa.
She was breathtaking. She wore a sweeping, emerald-green silk gown that complemented her dark hair and fair skin. Around her neck, gleaming under the crystal lights, was the sapphire heirloom necklace that had once belonged to Elena Moretti.
At their feet, wearing a tiny white lace dress, was Lily. She was happily eating strawberry tarts off a plate held by old Mr. Bruno, who had insisted on attending the event as a guest of honor rather than staff.
The Mayor of New York stepped up to the podium, raising a glass of champagne.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the Mayor announced, his voice echoing through the grand hall. "Tonight, we honor a family that has shown incredible resilience, strength, and philanthropy in the face of adversity. To Don Alessandro Moretti and his future bride, Miss Rosa Mendez!"
The crowd erupted into enthusiastic applause.
Alessandro looked down at Rosa, a warm, genuine smile lighting up his face. He wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close as the cameras flashed around them.
"How does it feel?" Alessandro whispered in her ear, his breath warm against her skin. "From sweeping my hallway to owning the room?"
Rosa looked out over the sea of wealthy, powerful people who had once ignored her existence, then looked up into the eyes of the man who had given her everything.

"It feels like a story my mother used to tell me," Rosa murmured softly, resting her head against his shoulder. "Except the prince is a little scarier."
Alessandro chuckled softly, pressing a kiss to her temple. "A prince who belongs entirely to you."
