Chapter 4 - The Senator’s Demise

Five minutes later, the front doors of the Moretti estate slammed open with incredible force.

Senator Anthony Romano strode into the grand marble hallway, flanked by six armed state troopers and four men in tailored suits carrying dark leather cases. Romano was sixty, with slicked-back silver hair, sharp blue eyes, and an aura of absolute political impunity.

Isabella stood behind her father, her eyes red from crying, pointing a manicured finger toward the grand staircase.

"He's up there, Papa!" Isabella shrieked. "He humiliated me! He stole my engagement ring and threatened to shoot me! And he's hiding that dirty maid and her brat in his private rooms!"

Senator Romano raised a hand, silencing his daughter. He looked up at the top of the staircase, where Alessandro was slowly walking down, step by quiet step.

Alessandro was no longer wearing his casual charcoal shirt. He had put on a dark wool suit jacket, his hands casually tucked into his pockets. Behind him walked Matteo and four of the family's most lethal enforcers, their hands resting near their shoulder holsters.

"Alessandro," Senator Romano said, his voice carrying the booming, practiced cadence of a seasoned politician. "I suggest you explain yourself before this becomes a federal matter. My daughter claims you breached our contract and threatened her life."

Alessandro reached the bottom step, stopping just three feet from the Senator. The air in the hallway was so tense that even the state troopers looked uncomfortable, their hands hovering nervously over their holstered sidearms.

"Your daughter lied to you, Anthony," Alessandro said smoothly. "Just like you've been lying to this city for thirty years."

Romano’s eyes narrowed. "Watch your mouth, boy. I made your family. Without my protection, your docks would be crawled over by federal agents by sunset."

"You didn't make my family, Anthony," Alessandro replied softly. "You leech off it. Just like you leeched off my father after you murdered my mother."

The room temperature seemed to plunge into freezing digits.

Senator Romano’s face drained of color for a fraction of a second before he caught himself, letting out a loud, scoffing laugh. "You've lost your mind. Is this what this is about? Some ancient grief? Your mother died in a car crash twenty-four years ago! Everyone knows that!"

"Except Sofia Mendez," Alessandro said quietly.

At the sound of that name, Romano’s smug expression crumbled completely. A subtle, panicked twitch appeared near his jawline.

"I don't know who that is," Romano snapped, though his voice lacked its previous booming confidence. "Troopers, arrest this man for assault and extortion—"

"Sofia Mendez left a daughter, Anthony," Alessandro interrupted, stepping closer. "Her name is Rosa. And she's currently upstairs in my study... holding the key to a safety deposit box at Manhattan Commerce Bank."

Isabella looked between her father and Alessandro, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Papa? Who is Sofia? What is he talking about?"

"Shut up, Isabella!" Romano barked, his political mask slipping completely. He reached into his coat, but before his hand could find his firearm, Matteo and three Moretti enforcers drew their weapons in a single, unified motion, aiming eight silencer-equipped barrels directly at the Senator's chest.

The state troopers instantly drew their guns, pointing them at Alessandro's men.

"Stand down!" the lead trooper ordered nervously. "Drop your weapons!"

"Lower your weapons, gentlemen," Alessandro said to the troopers, his voice entirely unbothered by the guns pointed at his head. "Senator Romano is not who you think he is. In less than ten minutes, the State Attorney General—whom I spoke to five minutes ago—will be releasing an indictment for the murder of Elena Moretti, thirty years of racketeering, and treason against the state."

Romano’s phone began to ring loudly in his pocket. Then the lead trooper’s radio crackled to life with an urgent, high-priority command from the State Police Commissioner.

The lead trooper listened to the radio, his face growing paler by the second. He lowered his gun slowly, looking at Senator Romano with disgust.

"Senator," the trooper said coldly. "Hand over your firearm. You're being relieved of your security detail."

"What?!" Isabella shrieked. "Are you crazy? He's a Senator!"

"Not anymore," Alessandro murmured.

Two troopers stepped forward, disarming Romano and forcing his arms behind his back. The proud, untouchable politician looked at Alessandro with pure venom, his chest heaving with desperate rage.

"You think you've won, Alessandro?" Romano spat as they dragged him toward the door. "You're just a gangster! You'll always be a monster!"

"Perhaps," Alessandro called out softly as the heavy oak doors opened. "But I am a monster who remembers his mother."
