Chapter 2 - The Chamber of Secrets

The third floor of the Moretti mansion was a place no employee—and certainly no guest—was ever permitted to enter. It housed Alessandro’s private office, his personal armory, and a vault that contained fifty years of the family’s darkest financial secrets.

When Alessandro entered the room, he found Rosa sitting on the edge of a leather sofa, her knuckles white as she squeezed her apron. Lily was sitting on the thick Persian rug, completely unbothered, playing with a set of antique brass paperweights she had lined up like toy cars.

Bruno stood silently by the door, holding a tray with warm milk, pastries, and black coffee.

"Leave us, Bruno," Alessandro ordered quietly.

"Yes, Don." The butler set the tray down and backed out of the room, closing the heavy oak doors behind him.

The heavy lock clicked shut, leaving only the sound of the rain beginning to patter against the high arched windows overlooking the Hudson River.

Rosa immediately stood up, her body trembling violently. "Don Moretti... please. I am so sorry about Miss Isabella’s ring... about the button... I will take Lily and leave New York tonight. You will never see us again."

Alessandro walked over to his desk and sat down slowly. He didn't look angry; he looked exhausted in a way that aged his sharp features by a decade.

"Sit down, Rosa," he said gently.

"Please, sir—"

"Sit down." It wasn't a command born of cruelty, but authority.

Rosa sank back onto the edge of the leather sofa, shielding Lily with her shadow.

Alessandro picked up a silver pen, turning it between his fingers. "Four years ago, you applied for a housekeeping job through a agency in Queens. Your papers said you were from Texas. Your background check was clean. Too clean."

Rosa swallowed hard, her throat moving dryly.

"I let it go because you worked hard, you were quiet, and you never asked questions," Alessandro continued, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "But every time I walked past you in the hallway, I felt something wrong. And today, your daughter held a piece of my mother’s history in her hand."

He set the gold button on the desk between them.

"Where did you get this, Rosa? And don't lie to me. If you lie, I will have my men tear apart every record in this state until I find out who you really are."

Rosa looked at the gold button, then down at her daughter, who was happily babbling to herself on the floor. Tears spilled over Rosa’s dark eyelashes, cutting clear tracks through the dust on her cheeks.

"I didn't steal it," Rosa whispered, her voice cracking. "I found it... inside my mother’s locket when she died."

Alessandro’s heart stopped. "Your mother?"

"My mother was Sofia Mendez," Rosa said, her lower lip shaking. "She was a seamstress in Naples. In 1998, she was hired to work privately for your family at their villa."

Alessandro’s mind spun backwards. Sofia... he remembered that name. She had been his mother’s personal maid and confidante during the turbulent months leading up to the car accident. When Elena Moretti died, Sofia had vanished overnight. The family had assumed she fled out of fear of the rival syndicates.

"My mother died three years ago," Rosa continued, wiping her cheeks with the back of her hand. "On her deathbed, she gave me that button and a sealed letter. She told me that if I ever needed protection, if I ever had nowhere left to go, I had to come to the Moretti estate."

"Why?" Alessandro pressed, leaning forward over the desk. "Why would your mother send you to my family?"

Rosa reached into the neck of her uniform, pulling out a thin silver chain that held a tarnished silver key. She unclasped it with trembling fingers and set it on the desk next to the gold button.

"Because my mother didn't run away twenty-four years ago, Don Moretti," Rosa said, looking straight into his eyes. "She was forced to flee. Because she knew the truth about the night your mother died."

Alessandro felt a cold, sharp shock run down his spine. "What truth?"

"Your mother didn't die in a car accident," Rosa revealed, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "She was murdered. By your father’s underboss—Senator Anthony Romano."
