Chapter 3 - The Vault Unlocked

The hospital room in Querétaro was quiet, save for the drip of the IV medication that kept the throbbing pain in Mariana's hand at bay. Her mother, Elena, had arrived from Celaya, weeping as she held Mariana’s uninjured left hand.
"Why didn't you tell me, mija?" Elena sobbed. "I thought you were happy here. You always smiled in the pictures."
"Adrian checked my phone every night, Mom," Mariana said softly, her voice raspy. "If I didn't look happy, he wouldn't let me call you for a month. But it's over now."
The door opened, and Natalia Torres walked in, carrying a laptop and a secure legal folder. Her expression was fiercely professional.
"Mariana, the medical report confirms third-degree burns on your right palm," Natalia said, sitting at the foot of the bed. "Adrian’s bail has been denied due to the severity of the video evidence and the flight risk his family’s wealth presents. But we need to move on the financial front immediately. You told me you had a backup."
Mariana nodded toward her purse, which the police had recovered from the house. "Inside the lining, there's a micro-SD card. It contains the mirrored servers of Hale Construction Supplies."

Natalia retrieved the small card, inserting it into her laptop. Within minutes, columns of numbers, fraudulent invoices, and scanned signatures began to populate the screen. Mariana’s grandmother’s trust fund—totaling nearly three million dollars—had been systematically drained through shell accounts created by Adrian and signed off by Don Ramiro’s financial firm.
"They didn't just abuse you, Mariana," Natalia said, her eyes widening as she scrolled through the data. "They used your money to bribe municipal inspectors for their construction projects. This isn't just a domestic violence case anymore. This is corporate fraud, money laundering, and grand larceny. Your hidden blue light didn't just capture a crime; it unlocked a cartel of white-collar corruption."
