Chapter 8 - The Clearing After the Storm

Six months after the sentencing, Mariana stood in front of the Juriquilla mansion. The federal seizure seals had been removed, and the property had been legally returned to her ownership as part of the asset liquidation.
The house looked different now. The heavy curtains were pulled back, letting the bright afternoon sun flood the stone rooms that used to feel like a dungeon.
Her mother, Elena, walked out onto the patio, holding two cups of coffee. "What are you going to do with this place, mija? It has too many bad memories."
"I'm selling it, Mom," Mariana said, looking at her scarred right hand. "But I'm not just walking away with the money."

Mariana had already partnered with Natalia Torres and the women’s support collective in Querétaro. A significant portion of the sale from the mansion would go toward funding a new, secure shelter for women escaping domestic violence—a place equipped with legal aid, psychological support, and a high-tech security system to ensure no abuser could ever reach them.
"They thought they could lock me in a prison," Mariana said softly, taking a sip of her coffee. "But they just gave me the blueprints to build a sanctuary for everyone else."
