Chapter 4 - The Threat from the Shadows

The political and financial machinery of the Hale family did not go down without a fight. Within forty-eight hours, Don Ramiro had hired the most expensive criminal defense firm in Central Mexico.

While Adrian remained behind bars, a coordinated media campaign began to emerge. Tabloids ran articles suggesting that Mariana had a history of psychological issues and that the "hidden camera" was an invasion of privacy funded by political rivals looking to target Don Ramiro’s upcoming campaign.

One evening, while Elena was down in the hospital cafeteria, a man in a gray suit entered Mariana’s room. He didn't look like a thug; he looked like a banker. He laid a heavy manila envelope on her bedside table.

"Mrs. Hale," the man said, his voice smooth and threatening. "I represent Don Ramiro. Inside that envelope is a settlement. Five million dollars, a house in San Miguel de Allende, and a monthly allowance for your mother. In exchange, you will sign an affidavit stating the camera was an AI-generated deepfake planted by a third party, and you will drop the charges."

Mariana looked at the envelope, then up at the man. "And if I say no?"

The man leaned closer, his eyes narrowing. "Then the court battle will drag on for ten years. Your mother’s small shop in Celaya will face sudden tax audits. Your reputation will be dragged through every mud pit in the country. And eventually, Adrian will get out on a technicality. Think about your future, Mariana. A burned hand heals. A ruined life does not."

Mariana felt a cold shiver of fear, the old instinct to comply screaming in the back of her mind. But then she looked at her thick white bandages. She remembered the smell of the scorching griddle and the sound of Beatriz’s laughter.

She picked up the envelope with her left hand and threw it onto the floor. "Get out of my room. And tell Ramiro that I am not his employee anymore. I am his prosecutor."
