Chapter 2 - The Calm Before the Storm

In the grand dining room of the Sterling Estate, the air smelled of dry-aged steak and expensive Cabernet.

Martha Sterling raised her glass, the crystal catching the dim light of the chandelier. "To a new beginning. To family, pure blood, and proper legacy."

Jessica Thorne giggled, pressing her cheek against Liam’s shoulder. The sapphire ring on her finger glinted brightly. "I still can't believe she thought she could fool us forever. A girl with no records, no family, no history. She was probably a grifter looking for a payout."

Liam stared down at his glass, his mind strangely heavy. "She didn't ask for money when she left, Mom."

"Because she knew she wouldn't get it!" Martha snapped dismissively. "The five-thousand-dollar check I threw in her bag was more than generous for three years of room and board. Honestly, Liam, stop moping. You have a real future now. Jessica’s father is the District Attorney. Her family opens doors for us that a nameless charity worker never could."

"What about the baby?" Liam asked, a sudden pang of guilt striking his chest. "She was seven months, Martha. It's freezing out there."

"If the child is yours, we will petition the court for full custody the moment it's born," Jessica said smoothly, swirling her wine. "We'll prove she's an unfit, homeless mother. The child will be raised as a true Sterling, without her low-class influence."

Liam nodded slowly, drowning his lingering conscience in a deep swallow of wine. "Yeah. Yeah, you're right. She brought this on herself."

Suddenly, the crystal chandelier above the dining table began to rattle.

It started as a low, deep vibration that resonated in the silver cutlery. Then, the wine in their glasses began to ripple violently.

"What is that?" Martha frowned, looking up at the ceiling. "An earthquake? In Seattle?"

"No," Liam muttered, standing up as the low thrum elevated into a deafening, mechanical roar that shook the very foundations of the twenty-million-dollar mansion. "That sounds like... engines."

Outside, the quiet, gated neighborhood of Bel-Air Heights was shattered.

Two massive, unmarked ultra-long-range military-grade private jets lowered through the thick storm clouds, defying every civil aviation law in existence. They didn't land at the airport. Escorted by four blacked-out attack helicopters, the giant aircraft hovered directly over the Sterling estate’s private park and golf course, their heavy rotors creating a localized hurricane that shattered the manicured hedges and blew over the iron gates.

"What on earth is happening?!" Martha shrieked, running to the floor-to-ceiling windows, her face turning pale.

Searchlights—bright enough to turn midnight into midday—pierced through the rain, locking onto the mansion. The glass windows vibrated so intensely they threatened to shatter.

Down the main avenue, a fleet of thirty obsidian-black armored SUVs breached the estate gates, knocking the reinforced steel off its hinges as if it were made of paper. Armed men in unmarked tactical gear spilled out, setting up a military perimeter around the mansion within ninety seconds.

Liam’s phone began to ring furiously.

It was his chief financial officer.

"Liam! What the hell is going on?!" the CFO screamed over the phone, panic rendering his voice high-pitched and unrecognizable. "Our shares! Our global lines of credit! Everything is being liquidated!"

"What are you talking about?!" Liam yelled back, terror suddenly seizing his throat.

"Someone just bought seventy percent of our debt obligations and called them in simultaneously! Our bank accounts are frozen! The maritime authority just revoked all our shipping licenses across North America and Europe! We are bankrupt, Liam! We are completely ruined!"

Before Liam could process the words, the heavy front doors of the Sterling mansion were blown off their hinges with a deafening bang.
