Chapter 5 - The Resurgence

Three months later.

The Valerius private estate in the Swiss Alps was bathed in bright, crisp sunlight. Snow-capped peaks framed a sprawling, ancient chateau surrounded by state-of-the-art security, immaculate gardens, and warm, sunlit terraces.

In the master nursery, Maximus sat in a plush velvet rocking chair, holding a tiny, dark-haired newborn in her arms.

Leo Alexander Valerius.

He had his mother’s bright, intelligent eyes and the healthy pink cheeks of a baby who wanted for nothing in the universe.

The door softly opened, and Alexander walked in, carrying a tray of hot tea and fresh pastries. The terrifying financial titan looked completely transformed, his sharp face softened by absolute adoration as he looked at his nephew.

"Is the little prince sleeping?" Alexander asked softly, setting the tray down.

"He just finished eating," Maximus smiled, gently rocking the baby. "He’s strong, Alex. So strong."

"He's a Valerius," Alexander said proudly, reaching down to let the baby wrap his tiny fingers around his pinky. "He was born to rule."

Cassian walked into the nursery next, tossing a thick dossier onto the coffee table before leaning over the crib to make a ridiculously silly face at the baby, completely breaking his hardened commander persona.

"Uncle Cassian is here, little lion," Cassian cooed, before snapping back into his serious tone as he looked at Maximus. "I brought the updates you asked for."

Maximus shifted Leo in her arms, looking at the folder. "How are they?"

Cassian leaned against the wall, crossing his arms with a dark smirk. "Liam is currently living in a studio apartment in outer Detroit. He tried to get a job as a middle manager at a logistics firm, but the moment they saw his name, they canceled the interview. He’s working night shifts at a late-night diner, barely making rent."

"And Martha?"

"Living off state assistance in a rundown suburb," Cassian replied without an ounce of sympathy. "She tried to sell her vintage jewelry, but turns out, most of the pieces she claimed were heirlooms were fake. Her country club membership was revoked, and her old 'friends' won't even take her calls. Jessica Thorne is currently working as a junior clerk at a traffic law firm after her father’s conviction wiped out her family's trust fund."

Maximus listened in silence, feeling no joy, no triumph, but a profound, settling peace.

"They built their entire lives on vanity and cruelty," Maximus said softly, kissing her baby's forehead. "They destroyed themselves long before you stepped off those jets."

"They deserved worse," Cassian muttered.

"They are living the exact life they feared most," Alexander noted quietly. "Obscurity, poverty, and irrelevance. For people like the Sterlings, that is a fate worse than death."
