Chapter 3 - The Gathering Shadow

Dust and splinters rained down on the grand foyer.

Martha screamed, hiding behind Liam, while Jessica dropped her wine glass, the crystal shattering against the marble floor.

Through the smoke and ruin walked two men.

The first was Alexander Valerius. He wore a custom charcoal suit, an Italian cashmere overcoat draped over his shoulders, his dark hair streaked with silver at the temples. His eyes were cold, calculating, and utterly devoid of human mercy.

Beside him stood Cassian Valerius. Younger, broader, wearing a black tactical turtleneck and a leather jacket. His eyes swept the room like a predator evaluating prey, a terrifying, razor-thin smile playing on his lips.

Behind them came six medical personnel wheeling a heated, state-of-the-art mobile gurney, followed by two armed guards escorting a woman wrapped in a white fur blanket.

Maximus.

She stepped forward, no longer the shivering, broken woman who had been kicked into the rain hours ago. Her hair was dry, her pale face restored to absolute elegance, her eyes cold as arctic ice.

Liam froze. "Maximus...?"

"Shut your mouth," Cassian barked, his voice carrying an authority that made Liam’s knees buckle instinctively. "You do not speak to her."

"Who are you people?!" Martha roared, trying to muster her usual aristocratic venom, though her hands were visibly shaking. "This is private property! I am calling the police! My daughter-in-law's father is the District Attorney!"

Alexander didn't even look at her. He pulled a pristine white handkerchief from his pocket and slowly wiped his leather gloves.

"The District Attorney was relieved of his post twenty minutes ago," Alexander said calmly. "His assets are seized, his office is under federal investigation for corruption, and he is currently being processed at a federal holding facility."

Jessica gasped, her face draining of all color. "That's impossible! My father is—"

"Your father was a pawn," Cassian interrupted smoothly, stepping closer to Jessica. He reached out, his long fingers seizing her hand with iron strength. Before she could scream, he slid the blue sapphire ring off her finger. "And this... belongs to a dynasty you couldn't comprehend in ten lifetimes."

Cassian tossed the ring to Maximus, who caught it effortlessly and dropped it into a trash bin held by a guard.

"It's contaminated," Maximus said quietly.

"Maximus, what is the meaning of this?!" Liam stepped forward, his voice trembling. "Who are these men? What did you do?!"

Alexander finally turned his gaze onto Liam. The sheer weight of that look made the young heir feel as though the oxygen had been drained from the room.

"We are her brothers," Alexander said softly. "I am Alexander Valerius. This is Cassian Valerius. And the woman you threw out into the storm like trash... is Maximus Valerius. The sole heiress to the Valerius Crown."

The name hit the room like a tactical warhead.

Valerius.

Even Martha Sterling, with her limited mid-tier corporate knowledge, knew the name. The Valerius family didn't appear on Forbes lists because they owned the institutions that created the lists. They were shadow royalty—the unseen hands that controlled global commerce, oil reserves, and defense infrastructure.

Martha’s knees gave out. She collapsed onto the marble floor, staring at Maximus in utter horror.

"No..." Martha whimpered. "No, she was a nobody... she had no family..."

"She wanted a quiet life," Cassian spat, stepping over Martha as if she were a piece of litter. "She wanted to see if a human being could love her for who she was, not for her money or her name. She lowered herself to enter your pathetic little world, and you treated her like dirt."

Liam fell to his knees, his eyes wide with pure, unadulterated terror. "Maxi... Maxi, please! I didn't know! I swear I didn't know! I love you!"

May you like

Maximus looked down at him, her eyes empty.

"You didn't need to know my name to treat me like a human being, Liam," she said softly. "You just had to be a man. And you failed."
