Chapter 9 - The New Horizon

As the sun began to set over the Tuscan hills, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of rose, gold, and deep violet, Maximus walked through the estate's private vineyard alone.
For years, she had believed that her destiny was to hide—that her real identity was too heavy, too dangerous, too complicated for anyone to love. She had hidden behind simple clothes, simple words, and a simple life, only to realize that hiding who you are only invites those who love the mask, not the soul.
She touched the small emerald pendant hanging at her throat—a gift from Alexander and Cassian on the day Leo was born. It symbolized rebirth.
Suddenly, she heard heavy footfalls behind her.
It wasn't her brothers.
A tall man with broad shoulders and warm, intelligent grey eyes walked up the gravel path. It was Julian Vance—the CEO of Vance Global Architecture, an old friend of Alexander’s who had been designing the new Valerius Children’s Hospital in Rome.
Julian had been visiting the estate for months, officially for project reviews, but unofficially... because he couldn't take his eyes off Maximus.
"You're far away from the party," Julian said softly, stopping a respectful distance away. His voice was deep, warm, and entirely lacking the arrogant undertones of the men Maximus used to know.
"Just thinking," Maximus smiled, turning to face him. "Looking back on how far we've come."
Julian walked closer, looking out at the golden sunset. "Alexander told me what happened years ago. In Seattle."
Maximus met his gaze calmly. "Does it scare you?"
"Scare me?" Julian chuckled gently, shaking his head. "No. It pikes my anger that anyone could be blind enough to hurt a woman like you. But more than that... it makes me admire your strength. You didn't just survive, Maximus. You rebuilt yourself into something unstoppable."
Maximus felt a strange, long-forgotten warmth bloom in her chest. For two years, she had shut down any thought of romance, focusing entirely on her son and her family. But looking into Julian’s honest, steady eyes, she realized she was no longer afraid of opening her heart.

"I didn't rebuild myself alone," she said softly. "I had people who loved me."
"And you deserve a lifetime of people who love you," Julian said earnestly, stepping closer, his hand reaching out tentatively until she met him halfway, lacing her fingers with his. "Properly this time. Without secrets. Without fear."
