Chapter 2 - Ghosts in the Starlight

The transition from the sterile, judgmental atmosphere of the bakery to the interior of Arthur Sterling's private limousine was surreal. Sarah sat on the plush leather seat, her hands clutched around a warm cup of tea that Arthur’s assistant had handed her. Toby was already fast asleep next to her, exhausted from the emotional roller coaster of the afternoon, his head resting comfortably against a velvet throw pillow.
The city lights blurred past the tinted windows as the luxury vehicle navigated the rainy streets, heading away from the affluent downtown core toward the rundown tenement district where Sarah lived.
"You don't have to do this, Mr. Sterling," Sarah said quietly, breaking the silence. She stared down at her tea, her reflection showing the dark circles under her eyes. "The boxes of cakes and pastries... it's too much. We don't have a working refrigerator big enough to store even a quarter of what you ordered."
Arthur, who sat across from her in the spacious cabin, closed the laptop he had been using to review family records. "Consider it a correction of an injustice, Sarah. But more importantly, I need to ask you a question, and I need you to be completely honest with me. The boy's father... who was he?"
Sarah shifted uncomfortably, a defensive guard instantly rising in her posture. "Why do you care? We don't ask for charity, Mr. Sterling. Today was an exception because I couldn't bear the thought of Toby having absolutely nothing on his birthday. His father is... he passed away before Toby was born."
"Was his name Thomas?" Arthur asked directly, his voice tight with an ancient pain. "Thomas Sterling?"
Sarah's teacup rattled violently against its saucer. She looked up, her face turning completely pale, her eyes filled with a sudden, sharp terror. "How... how do you know that name? Who are you?"
"I am his older brother," Arthur said softly, extending his hand across the space between them, though he didn't touch her, sensing her panic. "Thomas left the family home seven years ago. Our stepmother, Victoria, had forged documents framing him for a massive embezzlement scheme within the family foundation. Thomas was proud. Instead of fighting her dirty tactics, he chose to disappear. We searched for him for years, but the trail went completely cold in the eastern provinces. I had no idea he had married... I had no idea he had a son."
Sarah sank back into the leather seat, the tears she had fought so hard to contain in the bakery finally spilling over her cheeks. "He didn't marry me, Mr. Sterling. We were engaged. He changed his last name to Vance to hide from his family’s lawyers. He was so afraid they would find him and lock him away for a crime he didn't commit. He worked two jobs, in construction and warehousing, just to provide for us. And then... three months before Toby was born, there was a structural collapse at his job site. He didn't make it."
Arthur closed his eyes, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the armrest. The tragedy of his brother’s life—cut short because of a family lie—hit him with the force of a physical blow. But looking at the sleeping boy next to Sarah, he felt a sudden, fierce sense of purpose. Thomas was gone, but his legacy remained.
"The company that operated that construction site," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low register. "Was it by any chance Apex Infrastructure?"
Sarah blinked in surprise. "Yes. How did you know?"
"Because Apex Infrastructure is secretly owned by my stepmother's family," Arthur replied, a cold, lethal determination settling into his eyes. "They didn't just drive my brother away, Sarah. They built their fortunes on the safety violations that took his life. And they have spent the last six years ensuring you remained in poverty so you would never have the resources to look into the accident report."

He looked out the window as the limousine pulled up to a dilapidated, crumbling brick apartment building.
"Your days of hiding in the dark are over, Sarah," Arthur declared, turning back to her with absolute finality. "Tomorrow, you and Toby are moving out of this place. The Sterling family owes you a debt that can never be fully repaid, but I will start by dismantling the people who put those tears in your eyes."
