Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Vipers

The fallout from the Grand Regent gala was swift and merciless. By the following morning, the front page of every major newspaper and financial journal featured the same image: Victoria Sterling being escorted out of the hotel by federal fraud investigators, her head bowed to shield her face from the flashing lights.
The Vanguard Group’s board of directors held an emergency session at 7:00 AM. With Arthur and Sarah jointly controlling sixty percent of the voting power, the vote to remove Victoria and Julian from all corporate operations took less than three minutes.
I sat next to Sarah in the grand boardroom, Toby sitting quietly on a chair beside us, happily eating a slice of chocolate cake that Arthur’s personal chef had prepared. The atmosphere in the room was electric, a mixture of intense relief and lingering shock.
"The federal authorities have frozen all of Victoria’s personal shell companies," Evelyn reported, sliding a set of legal updates across the glass table. "Julian has already offered to turn state's evidence in exchange for a reduced sentence. He’s singing like a canary, Arthur. He’s given them the exact locations of the offshore servers containing the original safety logs for Apex Infrastructure."
"Let him talk," Arthur said, his eyes fixed on his laptop screen as the market opened. The Vanguard stock, which had initially dipped in pre-market trading, was roaring back to life, the public responding enthusiastically to Arthur's swift clean-up of the company's corrupt elements. "I want them both to see the inside of a state penitentiary before the winter sets in."
Sarah looked out the window at the city below, a deep, profound sense of peace finally settling into her features. The heavy burden of fear she had carried for seven years—the fear of being found, the fear of starving, the fear of failing her son—was completely gone.
"What happens to the bakery?" she asked suddenly, looking at Arthur.
Arthur smiled, a clever, warm glint in his eye. "The bakery chain is currently undergoing a complete management overhaul. The former manager, Bradley, is currently facing civil charges for violating our corporate code of conduct. But more importantly, the flagship store downtown needs a new owner. Someone who understands the true value of kindness."
Sarah blinked in surprise. "Arthur... you don't mean—"
May you like
"I’m transferring the entire hospitality division to a new subsidiary, Sarah," Arthur said, taking her hand gently. "It will be called the Thomas Sterling Foundation. You will be the executive director. Every afternoon, the leftover inventory won't be tracked or thrown away; it will be distributed to the local shelter systems, funded entirely by the dividends from Victoria’s seized shares. No mother will ever have to beg for a cake in this city again."
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears, but this time, they were tears of pure triumph. She reached over, pulling Toby into her lap, burying her face in his hair as the boy laughed, his small fingers sticky with chocolate icing.
