Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of the King

By noon the following day, Sarah and Toby were no longer residents of the tenement district. Arthur’s personal security team had handled the relocation with military precision, packing their few meaningful belongings and transporting them to a secure penthouse apartment located in the high-security residential wing of the Sterling Estate.

Sarah walked across the polished oak floors of the penthouse, her eyes scanning the panoramic view of the city forest below. It was a space filled with warmth, light, and safety—things she hadn't experienced since Thomas’s death. Toby was running around the grand living room, laughing delightedly as he discovered a massive, custom-built toy castle that had been delivered just an hour prior.

A soft knock sounded at the double mahogany doors. Arthur walked in, followed by a middle-aged woman carrying a sleek leather briefcase.

"Sarah," Arthur greeted her, his expression warm. "I hope the space is to your liking. This is Evelyn Vance—no relation to your alias, she is the senior partner at Sterling Legal Associates. She has been managing my private investigations into the Apex accident."

Evelyn stepped forward, offering Sarah a warm, professional smile. "It's an honor to meet you, Mrs. Vance—or rather, the future Mrs. Sterling, should we choose to legally restore your rightful title. I’ve spent the morning reviewing the sealed police files from the construction collapse six years ago. Arthur was right. The local precinct was paid a substantial 'consulting fee' by a shell company linked to Victoria Sterling just forty-eight hours after Thomas’s passing."

Sarah sat on the cream-colored sofa, her hands resting nervously on her lap. "What does that mean, Evelyn?"

"It means they bought the coroner's report and the safety inspectors," Evelyn explained, opening her briefcase and pulling out a series of financial statements. "The official record listed the collapse as an 'unforeseeable act of God due to weather conditions.' But we’ve managed to secure the original engineering logs from a whistleblower who was fired that same week. The support beams were rusted through, and Thomas had filed three formal complaints about them. They deliberately sent him into that sector to silence him."

Sarah’s breath hitched, a deep, volatile mix of sorrow and rage boiling over in her chest. "They killed him... because he knew the site was unsafe? Because he wouldn't let them risk the other workers' lives?"

"Thomas was always too good for the world we grew up in," Arthur said, walking over to the window, his back to them as he stared out at the sprawling estate. "Victoria wanted him gone because my father’s original will left sixty percent of the core Vanguard voting shares to Thomas and me jointly. With Thomas out of the picture, she managed to freeze his portion in a legal trust, using it to fund her own vanity projects and keep her corrupt family members in positions of power."

He turned around, his eyes locking onto Sarah’s with an intensity that made the room feel suddenly smaller. "Tomorrow night is the Vanguard Group’s annual autumn gala. Victoria is planning to announce her nephew, Julian, as the new executive director of our infrastructure division—the very division that absorbed Apex after the crash. She believes she has successfully buried the past."

"What are we going to do?" Sarah asked, her voice strengthening, the submissive, broken woman from the bakery fully disappearing.

"We are going to give Toby the birthday celebration he truly deserves," Arthur said, a cold, calculating smile appearing on his lips. "And we are going to invite the media to watch the Sterling family reunion. Victoria thinks she owns the kingdom. She has no idea the real heirs just walked through the front gate."
