Chapter 8 - A Promise in the Frost

The evening was quiet and still as Arthur and Sarah walked through the snow-covered paths of the Sterling Estate gardens. Toby was inside the main house, safely tucked into bed after a long day of playing in the snow, watched over by Marcus’s trusted security team.

The stars above were brilliant, reflecting off the pristine white frost that blanketed the lawns. Sarah wrapped her wool coat tighter around herself—a new, warm cashmere coat that Arthur had gifted her, though she still kept the old, worn one in her closet to remind herself of where she had come from.

"You've been quiet tonight, Arthur," Sarah said, her breath forming small white clouds in the crisp air. "Is something wrong with the Vanguard board?"

"The board is perfectly fine," Arthur said, stopping near a stone pavilion that overlooked a frozen lake. He turned to face her, his expression serious but deeply tender. "I was just thinking about my brother. Thomas was always the romantic one. He believed that love was the only currency that mattered in this world. I used to laugh at him. I thought power and corporate control were the only things that kept a man safe."

He stepped closer, taking both of her gloved hands in his. "But the day I saw you in that bakery... the way you stood between that abusive fool and your son, despite having nothing... I realized Thomas was right. You had more strength in your broken voice than I had in my entire corporate empire."

Sarah’s heart hammered against her ribs, a beautiful, terrifying hope rising in her chest. "Arthur..."

"Sarah, I don't want to just be Toby's uncle," Arthur said explicitly, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, velvet box. He opened it to reveal a simple, stunning ring—not a massive, ostentatious diamond like the one Victoria had worn, but a beautiful, unheated sapphire set in a band of white gold, matching the color of the midnight-blue dress she had worn the night they defeated their enemies. "I want to be your husband. I want to build a life with you where we never have to look back at the shadows again. Will you marry me?"

Sarah stared at the ring, the light of the stars catching the deep blue stone. She looked up at Arthur’s face—the face of a man who had used his immense wealth not to crush, but to heal, to protect, and to lift up the broken.

"Yes, Arthur," she whispered, her voice cracking with the same emotion that had once broken in the bakery, but this time, it was filled with pure, unadulterated joy. "Yes, I will."

He slid the ring onto her finger, pulling her into a warm, tight embrace as the winter wind blew softly around them, carrying away the last remnants of the past.
