Chapter 5 - The Unmasking

"What is the meaning of this charade, Arthur?" Victoria hissed, stepping down from the stage, her voice low enough to escape the microphones but sharp enough to cut. Julian stepped up behind her, his face dark with confusion and defensive anger. "Who are these people? You bring a street urchin and a nameless woman into a private corporate function?"
"Nameless?" Sarah stepped forward, her voice remarkably steady, carrying a quiet power that shocked the surrounding investors. "My name is Sarah Vance Sterling, Victoria. I am the woman who spent three months listening to my fiancé scream in his sleep because of the nightmares your family’s corrupt companies gave him. I am the woman who held his hand when he died on a concrete floor because your nephew refused to spend fifty thousand dollars to reinforce a structural foundation."
The journalists in the crowd instantly went wild. The flashes of their cameras turned the ballroom into a strobe-lit courtroom.
"This is slander!" Julian shouted, his finger pointing aggressively at Sarah. "Security, remove these grifters immediately! They are trying to extort the company!"
"Touch them, Julian, and my security team will ensure you spend the night in a concrete cell," Arthur said calmly, clapping his hands once.
Immediately, the massive digital display screens behind the main stage—which were supposed to show the promotional video for Julian’s new appointment—flickered and changed. Instead of corporate branding, a series of high-definition documents appeared.
The first was a certified DNA report, signed by the chief geneticist of the state university, showing a 99.9% familial match between Toby Sterling Vance and the late Thomas Sterling. The second was a series of encrypted wire transfer records showing Victoria’s personal bank account funnelling four million dollars into the off-grid accounts of the local police precinct that had handled the Apex accident investigation.
The crowd erupted into an absolute roar of whispers and gasps. The board members of the Vanguard Group, who were sitting at the front tables, stood up in unison, their faces masks of pure corporate panic.
"You think you’ve won, Arthur?" Victoria whispered, her eyes flashing with a rabid, cornered rage. She stepped closer, her teeth bared. "Even if the boy is Thomas’s son, the trust is locked. The language of your father's will requires a physical signature from Thomas himself to release those shares to an heir before the boy reaches twenty-one. Thomas is dead. You cannot vote his block tomorrow, and you cannot stop me from taking this company."
"You always were a terrible lawyer, Victoria," Evelyn Vance’s voice cut through the noise as she stepped out from the crowd, holding a small, weathered leather journal. "Thomas didn't leave his family empty-handed. Before he died, he filed a fully notarized declaration of lineage and an emergency proxy assignment with a private estate firm in the eastern provinces. He knew you would try to steal his son's future. He left the key with his wife."
Sarah reached into her evening clutch and pulled out a small, metallic flash drive, placing it directly into the hands of the corporate secretary who was standing nearby, trembling.

"The digital signature matches the original family ledger, Victoria," Sarah said, her voice dropping to a freezing register. "The trust is open. And as the legal guardian of Thomas’s heir, I am officially casting our sixty percent voting block to strip you and your family of every single asset, title, and share you hold within the Vanguard Group. Effective immediately."
Victoria stumbled backward, her knees buckling slightly. Julian caught her arm, but his own face was entirely devoid of color. The empire they had spent a decade building through blood, lies, and corruption had just dissolved in the span of five minutes.
