Chapter 1 - The Arrival at the Gate

The words hung in the air like a heavy frost.
"I didn't fall."
Garrick’s laugh froze mid-tone. His mother, Miriam, lowered her glass of wine, her sharp eyes narrowing as she glared across the table at Sienna.
"What did you just say?" Garrick asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, quiet register. The casual warmth he had displayed moments ago vanished completely, replaced by the chilling authority of a man who was unaccustomed to being contradicted under his own roof.
Sienna shrank back, her breath hitching as she looked down at her plate. But my hand remained firmly over hers, steady and unyielding.
"She said she didn't fall, Garrick," I said softly, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "And since you seem so curious about my guest list, let me satisfy your interest."
Before Garrick could speak, a sharp chime echoed through the grand foyer of the Ashford mansion, followed by the heavy, authoritative knock of multiple people standing at the double mahogany doors.
Garrick’s younger brother twitched nervously. "Are we expecting someone?"
"Ignore it," Miriam commanded, her tone haughty. "It’s probably the estate security checking on a delivery. Garrick, deal with your wife."
Garrick stood up slowly, leaning over the table toward Sienna. "You’re making a spectacle of yourself in front of your mother, Sienna. Apologize right now, go upstairs, and—"
The heavy front doors didn't just open; they were unlocked from the outside with a master override key.
A firm, echoed set of footsteps echoed down the marble hallway leading into the formal dining room. Leading the group was a tall man in a tailored dark suit, his silver hair pulled back neatly, carrying an undeniable aura of absolute authority. Beside him walked three men in sharp executive suits, two senior state prosecutors, and a gentle-looking woman carrying a medical briefcase.
Behind them stood six uniformed officers, led by Police Commissioner Raymond Fletcher.
Garrick stood frozen, his hand still resting heavily on the back of his chair. The color drained out of his face in an instant, leaving him as pale as the linen napkins on the table.
"Raymond?" Garrick stammered, recognizing the Police Commissioner immediately. "What... what is the meaning of this? Why are you in my home?"
Commissioner Fletcher didn't answer Garrick. Instead, he walked past the head of the table, stepped directly toward me, and tipped his hat respectfully.
"Prosecator Vance," Fletcher said formally, using my former title as the State's Chief Deputy Prosecutor. "We came the moment we received your distress distress ping. The tactical unit is securing the perimeter as requested."
Miriam stood up so fast her chair screeched against the hardwood floor. "This is absurd! You cannot barge into the Ashford residence like this! We are major donors to the police department! Garrick is the Chairman of Ashford Enterprises!"
Standing behind Commissioner Fletcher was Arthur Vance—my brother and the Chief Executive Officer of the global investment firm that held sixty percent of Ashford Enterprises' voting stock.
Arthur stepped forward, pulling a thin leather folder from his coat. He looked at Garrick with cold, unyielding disgust.
"You were the Chairman, Garrick," Arthur said calmly. "As of seven minutes ago, an emergency board meeting was convened digitally. Given the active domestic violence investigation and immediate corporate liability, your position has been suspended indefinitely. All personal credit lines tied to the holding company have been frozen."
"What?!" Garrick roared, slamming his fist onto the table. "You can't do that! On what grounds?!"
"On my word," I said, standing up smoothly from my seat.
I walked over to the woman carrying the medical briefcase. "Dr. Chen, please inspect my daughter's arm and check her for concealed soft-tissue injuries."
Dr. Chen nodded gently, approaching Sienna. "Hello, Sienna. I'm here to help you. Let's step into the quiet room next door."
"Don't you dare touch her!" Garrick stepped forward aggressively, reaching out to grab Sienna's good arm.
Before his fingers could even graze her sleeve, Commissioner Fletcher stepped smoothly into his path, placing a hand against Garrick's chest with enough force to push him back two steps.

"Touch her again in my presence, Mr. Ashford," Fletcher whispered chillingly, "and I won't wait for a warrant to place you in restraints."
Garrick stared at the Commissioner, then at the board members, and finally at me. For the first time in his life, the impenetrable wall of privilege and arrogance he had built around himself showed a massive, gaping crack.
