Chapter 8 - Reclaiming Independence

Six months later.
The dissolution of the marriage was finalized in record time, handled by the top family law division at my firm.
Under the terms of the settlement and asset forfeiture rulings resulting from the criminal conviction, Garrick’s frozen personal wealth was liquidated to satisfy restitution judgments, while the control of Ashford Enterprises was permanently restructured.
Sienna used her share of the settlement not for luxury, but to establish The Vance Sanctuary Foundation—a non-profit organization dedicated to providing immediate legal representation, emergency medical care, and safe housing for victims of domestic abuse.
On a bright spring afternoon, the foundation’s first emergency shelter facility held its ribbon-cutting ceremony in downtown North Bay.
The property was a restored historic brick building, surrounded by green lawns, secure courtyards, and state-of-the-art security systems.
Sienna stood at the podium in front of a large crowd of supporters, city leaders, and media representatives. She wore a striking pastel pink suit, looking radiant, strong, and entirely transformed.
"When I was at my lowest," Sienna spoke into the microphone, her voice steady and confident, "I felt completely invisible. I thought that wealth and isolation meant that no one would ever hear me cry for help. Today, we open these doors so that no victim in this city ever feels invisible again."
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.
Beside the stage stood Arthur, Marcus, Dr. Chen, and Commissioner Fletcher—all of whom had joined the foundation’s advisory board.
I sat in the front row, holding a bouquet of fresh white lilies, watching my daughter command the stage with absolute grace.
After the speeches concluded, Sienna stepped down from the podium and walked over to me, wrapping her arms around my neck in a long, heartfelt hug.

"Thank you, Mom," she whispered into my ear. "For being my voice when I couldn't speak."
I pulled back, holding her face gently between my hands. "You always had the voice, my sweet girl. You just needed a quiet moment to remember how strong you are."
