Chapter 4 - The Arrest and the Arraignment

The North Bay District Courthouse was swarming with news crews by 8:15 AM the following morning.

Word of the sudden midnight arrest of Garrick Ashford—one of the region’s most prominent tech investors—had leaked to the press, sending shockwaves through the financial and corporate sectors.

Inside the courtroom, Garrick sat at the defense table wearing a navy blue prison jumpsuit, his hair uncombed, looking visibly disheveled. Beside him sat Jonathan Harrison, a seasoned, ruthless defense attorney who had represented high-profile executives for decades. Miriam sat in the gallery behind them, accompanied by a separate legal team, looking furious but subdued.

Judge Brenda Holloway presided over the bench—a tough, no-nonsense jurist known for her strict adherence to statutory guidelines.

"Case number 4092: State versus Garrick Ashford," the clerk announced.

Harrison stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, my client is a pillar of this community, the head of Ashford Enterprises, and a dedicated philanthropist. The allegations brought against him stem from a tragic domestic misunderstanding instigated by his mother-in-law, Mrs. Evelyn Vance. We request immediate release on personal recognizance or a modest bail set at $50,000."

Judge Holloway looked over her glasses at the prosecution table.

Marcus stood up, but I stepped up beside him, wearing my formal legal robes as co-counsel for the victim.

"Your Honor, if I may," I spoke clearly, my voice carrying into every corner of the silent gallery.

Harrison frowned. "Your Honor, Mrs. Vance is the mother of the alleged victim! This is a clear conflict of interest!"

"Mrs. Vance is a licensed attorney of this bar and special co-counsel appointed by the District Attorney’s office for this arraignment," Judge Holloway overruled sharply. "Proceed, Counselor Vance."

"Thank you, Your Honor," I said smoothly. "The defense characterizes this as a 'domestic misunderstanding.' I submit to the court Exhibit A: the certified radiological report from Dr. Elizabeth Chen detailing a compound spiral fracture to Mrs. Ashford's arm inflicted less than forty-eight hours ago."

I approached the clerk, handing over a folder.

"Furthermore, we submit Exhibit B: audio recordings captured within the defendant's home wherein Mr. Ashford explicitly threatens to 'break her other arm' if she attempted to contact her family."

A loud gasp echoed through the gallery.

Garrick snapped his head toward Harrison, whispering frantically, "How did they get those?!"

Harrison looked visibly shaken as Judge Holloway put on her reading glasses, reviewing the transcript printouts. Her expression turned cold as slate.

"Additionally, Your Honor," I continued relentlessly, "our financial forensic team has identified substantial offshore accounts set up by the defendant in non-extradition jurisdictions over the past forty-eight hours. Mr. Ashford possesses private aircraft access and immense capital. He presents a catastrophic flight risk and an immediate physical threat to the victim."

Judge Holloway slammed her folder shut.

"Mr. Harrison," Judge Holloway said, her voice dripping with disdain. "Your client's actions as presented are abhorrent. The court finds clear and convincing evidence that Mr. Ashford poses an immediate danger to the victim and the community, as well as a significant flight risk."

"Your Honor, please!" Harrison protested, standing up.

"Bail is denied," Judge Holloway ordered firmly, striking her gavel down hard. "The defendant will remain in custody pending trial. Mrs. Miriam Ashford's bail is set at $1,000,000, with mandatory electronic monitoring and immediate surrender of her passport."

Garrick thrashed against his restraints as the bailiffs grabbed his arms. "Evelyn! You can't do this to me! Sienna! Talk to me!"

May you like

I turned slowly and looked him straight in the eye as he was dragged toward the holding cells.

"She will never talk to you again, Garrick," I said quietly. "Except through me."
