Chapter 5 - Sienna’s Awakening

Three weeks passed.

Sienna stayed in the east wing of my estate, surrounded by familiar gardens, high security, and unconditional support.

Dr. Chen visited twice a week to monitor her physical recovery, while a specialized trauma therapist, Dr. Aris, held daily sessions with her in the sunroom.

At first, Sienna was hesitant to speak. She had spent two years conditioned to believe that her opinions were worthless, her emotions were inconveniences, and her pain was deserved.

One afternoon, I found her sitting on the patio, watching the golden autumn leaves fall from the maple trees. Her arm was still encased in a sleek, lightweight cast, but the swelling on her face had entirely disappeared, revealing her soft, beautiful features once more.

I set a tray with hot tea and fresh scones on the small iron table beside her.

"How was your session with Dr. Aris today?" I asked gently, taking a seat across from her.

Sienna looked at her tea, a faint smile touching her lips. "It was... hard. But good. She helped me realize something today, Mom."

"What’s that, sweetheart?"

"I kept thinking that if I had just been better—if I had cooked better dinners, or stayed quiet during his meetings, or dressed the way Miriam wanted—he wouldn't have gotten angry," Sienna said softly, her voice steadying. "Dr. Aris told me that abusers don't get angry because of what you do. They get angry because of who they are."

I reached across the table, squeezing her uninjured hand tightly. "She's entirely right, Sienna. Garrick's violence wasn't a reaction to your behavior. It was his method of control."

Sienna looked up at me, her brown eyes—once clouded with fear—now clear and filled with a growing ember of determination.

"I want to help with the case, Mom," she stated firmly.

I paused. "Sienna, you don't have to relive any of this in court if you aren't ready. Marcus and I have enough physical and financial evidence to convict him without putting you on the stand."

"No," Sienna shook her head, her jaw setting into an expression I recognized all too well—the same fierce resolve I had carried my entire career. "He spent two years trying to strip away my voice. If I stay hidden behind your lawyers, he still wins a little bit of that power."

She stood up, pulling her cardigan tight around her.

"I want to take the stand. I want him to look at me while I tell the truth."

May you like

I stood beside her, feeling a swell of pride so immense it brought warm tears to my eyes.

"Then we will prepare you," I whispered, holding her close. "And when you speak, the whole world will hear you."
