Chapter 2 - Public Reckoning

The midday Texas heat was stifling as Olivia and I stepped out to the driveway. The backyard was visible through the wrought-iron fence, and the atmosphere had shifted from celebratory to chaotic. Two delivery vans from the high-end catering company were idling near the gate, and an angry operations manager in a black apron was demanding immediate payment from my relatives.

My Aunt Susan, who had spent the last hour sipping vintage champagne on my patio, stood near the fountain looking bewildered. “Ethan!” she called out as she spotted me carrying Mason toward my truck. “What is going on? Your mother said there was an administrative error with your bank, but the head chef says the card was reported stolen!”

I stopped near the passenger door, placing Mason securely into his rear-facing car seat while Olivia climbed into the front passenger side. I turned around to face my aunt and the six other relatives who had wandered into the driveway to witness the commotion.

“There’s no administrative error, Aunt Susan,” I said, keeping my voice steady so everyone could hear clearly. “The card was canceled because my mother spent six thousand dollars of my money on catering for a party I never authorized, while my wife was forced to scrub dirty dishes upstairs with a feverish baby.”

Gasps echoed through the small group. Uncle Richard, a man who prided himself on family honor, stepped forward with his brows furrowed. “Ethan, that’s a heavy accusation. Your mother told us she funded this entire reunion herself to celebrate Mason’s milestone!”

“My mother hasn't earned a income in eight years,” I replied flatly. “She lived off the $5,000 monthly allowance I sent her under the belief that she was taking care of my wife and child. Instead, she spent it on luxury clothes, spa memberships, and catering, while convincing Olivia that we were nearly bankrupt.”

Just then, Linda stormed out through the front door, her eyes wild and her mascara slightly smudged. “Don't listen to him!” she screamed to the crowd, pointing a manicured finger at me. “He’s being manipulated by that gold-digger! Olivia wants to cut me out of this family! She’s turning my own son against his mother!”

Olivia sat frozen in the truck, tears spilling down her cheeks. I closed the truck door gently, locked it from the outside, and walked straight toward Linda.

“You have twenty-five minutes left,” I said, pulling out my phone and showing her the screen. “The caterers are currently filing a report for non-payment. If you don't use your own bank account—the one where you stashed $38,000 of my money—to pay them right now, the police will be here before I even reach the pediatric clinic.”

Uncle Richard looked at Linda, his voice stern. “Linda... is this true? Did you take Ethan’s money and treat us on his dime while mistreating Olivia?”

Linda’s lip quivered. She looked around at her brothers, sisters, and nieces, searching for support, but every face had hardened into disappointment and disgust. The illusion of her grand, self-sacrificing matriarch persona had shattered in broad daylight.

Without another word, I climbed into the truck, backed out of the driveway, and left the chaotic scene behind.
