Chapter 6 - The Great Family Cleanse

By late afternoon, the legal machinery had taken complete control. Faced with the immediate prospect of a state prison sentence for financial fraud and forgery, Linda broke down and signed every agreement my legal team placed in front of her.
She relinquished all claims to tenancy, signed a confession detailing her unauthorized access to my financial credentials, and surrendered her bank accounts to cover the restitution of the $50,000 HELOC drawdown and the stolen monthly allowances.
News of the scandal spread through the extended Carter family like wildfire. Aunt Susan and Uncle Richard, mortified by how they had been used as props in Linda’s lavish garden party, called me repeatedly to apologize.
That evening, Uncle Richard hosted an emergency family gathering at his house. Olivia and I attended, bringing Mason, who was already looking much brighter and fever-free after his medication.
In front of fifteen relatives, Uncle Richard stood up and addressed the room. “We were blind, and we allowed Linda’s arrogance to blind us further. We enjoyed a party that was built on the suffering of Ethan’s wife and child. On behalf of the Carter family, we apologize to Olivia.”
My relatives, one by one, came forward to express their deep regret. Aunts who had previously ignored Olivia in the kitchen offered sincere apologies, admitting that Linda had systematically fed them false stories about Olivia being lazy and ungrateful.

Olivia held her head high, accepting their apologies with grace, but making one thing clear: “Ethan and I are building boundaries. Respecting our family means respecting our home.”
For the first time in years, I felt a burden lift from my shoulders. The toxic web my mother had spun around my life had been dismantled completely.
