Chapter 3 - Sanctuary and Diagnosis

The waiting room at the Dallas Pediatric Emergency Clinic was quiet, bathed in soft fluorescent light. Within twenty minutes of our arrival, the triage nurse checked Mason’s temperature. It had spiked to 103.1 degrees.
“Ear infection, severe,” the pediatrician announced after examining Mason’s throat and ears. “It’s been building up for at least three days. Didn't anyone notice his irritability or reduced appetite?”
Olivia broke down, covering her face with her hands. “I told her... I told Linda three days ago that Mason was crying continuously and refusing his bottles. She told me I was overreacting and that I was an anxious mother. She gave him over-the-counter soothing drops and made me clean the guest rooms instead.”
The doctor gave Olivia an empathetic look, prescribing a course of antibiotics and fever reducers. “He’ll be fine in forty-eight hours with proper care, but he needs rest, hydration, and peace.”
After picking up the medication from the pharmacy, I drove us to a boutique hotel on the northern side of Dallas. I booked a double suite for a full week, far away from the suburbs and my mother’s reach.
Once Mason was medicated and sound asleep in the crib provided by the hotel, I brought Olivia a hot meal from room service. She sat on the velvet sofa, looking small and fragile in her oversized sweater.
“I felt so trapped, Ethan,” she whispered, staring into her soup bowl. “Every time you called from the construction site, she stood right outside the room door. She told me if I complained to you, you’d think I was weak and incompetent. She said engineers need strong wives, not burdens.”
I sat beside her, wrapping my arms tightly around her shoulders. “I failed you, Liv. I trusted the wrong person because she was my mother, and I left you alone in the lion’s den. I will spend the rest of my life making this up to you.”

“What are we going to do about the house?” she asked softly.
“She’s getting out,” I said firmly. “And if she doesn't leave willingly, the law will move her.”
