Chapter 9 - A New Horizon

By the time Mason’s second birthday rolled around, the contrast with the previous year could not have been more profound.

There were no caterers, no high-end lobster platters, no performative luxury, and no toxic family dynamics. Instead, our backyard hosted a simple, joyous gathering: Uncle Richard, Aunt Susan, a few genuine friends, and neighborhood children playing on the lawn.

The backyard was decorated with handmade banners, colorful balloons, and a simple homemade chocolate cake that Olivia and I had baked together the night before.

Mason ran across the green grass in a tiny denim overall, chasing bubbles and squealing with delight. Olivia stood beside me, wearing her blue dress, her arm linked comfortably through mine.

Uncle Richard walked over with a glass of lemonade, looking out at the children playing. “You built something real here, Ethan,” he said quietly. “It takes a strong man to cut out the decay to save the tree.”

“I didn't do it alone,” I said, looking down at Olivia. “I just finally realized who was actually keeping this family together.”
