Chapter 7 - Rebuilding the Foundation

A month passed. The house outside Dallas was finally quiet, clean, and peaceful.

Linda was gone, placed in an outpatient facility in San Antonio under the supervision of my elder brother, David, who had stepped in to manage her court-ordered rehabilitation and financial guardianship. She was barred from contacting Olivia or coming within five hundred feet of our residential property.

I made sweeping changes to my professional life as well. I resigned from my position as a traveling field engineer and accepted a senior managerial role at a local engineering consultancy firm in downtown Dallas. The new role meant a slight pay cut, but it guaranteed that I was home every single evening by 5:30 PM.

One evening, after putting Mason to bed, I walked into the master bedroom holding a small, velvet-wrapped box.

Olivia was sitting by the vanity table, brushing her hair. She looked healthy, radiant, and relaxed—a far cry from the exhausted woman scrubbing pans on a plastic stool.

“What’s this?” she asked with a soft smile as I placed the box in her lap.

“Open it,” I said.

She unwrapped the velvet and opened the box. Inside was the tiny silver pendant engraved with the letter M for Mason, along with the beautiful blue maternity dress she had admired online months ago.

Tears welled up in her eyes, but this time, they were tears of pure joy. “You remembered...”

“I will never forget again,” I whispered, kissing her forehead. “You are the heart of this family, Olivia. Not anyone else.”
