Chapter 2 - Reclaiming the Triplets

The administrative office of St. Jude Children's Hospital was silent except for the rhythmic ticking of a wall clock. Three state social workers sat across from Damien’s lead counsel, Arthur Pendelton, who looked remarkably smug for a man standing on shifting sand.

"As you can see," Pendelton argued, tapping a stack of legal papers, "Mr. Moretti’s status as a billionaire real estate developer makes him the only parent capable of providing stable financial care. Ms. Vance is unemployed, currently uninsured, and medically unstable. The infants should be placed in Mr. Moretti's exclusive custody until a formal hearing."

The lead social worker hesitated, looking down at the custody hold forms. "It does seem the mother lacks immediate resources—"

The heavy wooden door flew open.

I didn't enter in a wheelchair. Despite the agonizing pull on my surgical stitches, despite the deep, thumping ache in my chest, I walked in on my own two feet. I wore a tailored ivory coat over a simple silk dress, my dark hair pinned back, my face immaculate despite the pale hue of my skin.

Behind me marched Julian Vance, accompanied by four men in tailored dark suits carrying leather briefcases—the premier family law team in the tri-state area.

"If you sign that document, Administrator," Julian announced in a voice that cut through the room like a blade, "you will be personally named in a federal kidnapping and civil rights conspiracy lawsuit within thirty minutes."

Pendelton leapt to his feet, his smugness evaporating. "Clara—Ms. Vance! You should be in bed—"

"I am the sole legal custodian of Leo, Maya, and Samuel Vance," I said, my voice steady, cold, and ringing with absolute clarity. I did not look at Pendelton; I kept my eyes locked on the state official. "My husband severed his legal ties to my children and me at 2:14 PM three days ago. By doing so, he legally waived his right to expedited guardianship under state family code section 402."

Julian placed a thick, gold-embossed binder on the desk.

"This is the trust confirmation," Julian said smoothly. "An unencumbered balance of four hundred million dollars has just been deposited into an escrow account dedicated exclusively to the healthcare and upbringing of the Vance triplets. Furthermore, Ms. Vance has purchased the entire east wing of this hospital outright as of 8:00 AM this morning."

The social worker’s jaw dropped. She looked at the documents, then at Pendelton, whose phone began vibrating frantically in his pocket.

Pendelton answered it with a shaky hand. "Hello? Boss—"

"Pendelton!" Damien’s roar was so loud it leaked through the phone speaker into the quiet room. "What the hell is happening?! The bank just seized the penthouses! Get the children immediately!"

"I... I can't, Mr. Moretti," Pendelton stammered, sweating through his collar. "She's... she bought the hospital wing. She has full financial indemnity. The state just closed the review."

I stepped forward, taking the phone directly from the lawyer's hand. I brought it to my ear.

"Damien," I said softly.

The line went dead silent on the other end. For three long seconds, all I heard was his heavy, ragged breathing.

"Clara?" His voice sounded strained, confused, laced with a dark, underlying fury he was struggling to control. "What game are you playing? You were dying."

May you like

"I was," I replied, a slow, cold smile touching my lips. "But I survived. And now, Damien... you are the one on life support."

Before he could answer, I hung up and handed the phone back to his shivering attorney. "Tell your client that if he wants to see my children, he can submit a formal request through my legal team. It will be promptly rejected."
