Chapter 3 - The Cold Confrontation

The rain poured in relentless sheets over the glass walls of the Blackwood Club, the most exclusive private establishment in the city's financial district. Normally, Damien sat in the corner booth, revered and feared by politicians, judges, and rival bosses alike.

Tonight, he sat alone, staring at an empty chair.

When the glass doors slid open, the room fell silent. I walked in, flanked by two private security officers who remained at the perimeter. I wore dark velvet, my posture straight, the fire in my eyes burning away any lingering physical weakness.

Damien stood up as I approached. He looked different than he had three days ago. The pristine perfection of his suit was slightly frayed; his dark hair was unkempt, and dark circles shadowed his fierce, amber eyes.

"Clara," he said, taking a step toward me, his hand extending instinctively.

"Sit down, Mr. Moretti," I said, taking the seat across from him without taking my eyes off his face.

He flinched at the formal title, then slowly sat back down, leaning forward, resting his elbows on the table.

"We need to talk," he said, his voice low and commanding, trying to reclaim the dominance he had wielded over me for four years of marriage. "This petty legal stunt has gone far enough. You're attacking my logistics lines. You froze my legitimate payrolls. Do you have any idea what the Syndicate will do if they think I’m losing control?"

"I know exactly what they will do," I replied calmly, crossing my hands over my lap. "They will replace you."

Damien’s jaw clenched. "I built this city! I protected you!"

"You left me to die on an operating table while you signed away our life together to go sleep with your secretary," I cut in, my voice dropping to a whisper that carried more power than a scream. "You looked at my dying body and told a doctor, 'I'm not her husband anymore.' Do not speak to me of protection."

Damien swallowed hard, a flicker of genuine shock crossing his face. "I... I thought you were already gone. The doctors said your brain had been without oxygen for four minutes. Chloe said—"

"Ah, yes. Chloe," I said, tilting my head. "The woman currently wearing the emerald necklace my grandfather gave me for our anniversary."

"Clara, listen to me," Damien pleaded, his arrogance cracking for the very first time, exposing a glimpse of desperate panic beneath. "The divorce... it was a strategic move. The Syndicate was pressing me. I needed to separate my assets from you so my enemies couldn't target my family!"

I laughed. It was a light, hollow sound that made him recoil.

"You lie so easily, Damien. You didn't do it to protect me. You did it because you thought I was dead, and you wanted to claim the Vance heritage without the burden of a wife or three sick babies." I leaned forward, looking deep into his eyes. "You thought I was weak because I loved you. You forgot who raised me."

I stood up, smoothing down my coat.

"This wasn't a meeting to negotiate, Damien. This was a courtesy call to let you know that tomorrow morning, Vance Global Holdings takes control of the Moretti Port Authority. You have twelve hours to pack your desk."

"Clara, wait!" He lunged forward, grabbing my wrist.

Instantly, two iron hands grabbed Damien’s shoulders, pinning him back into his seat. My head security officer stepped between us, his weapon subtly visible beneath his jacket.

I looked down at his grip on my wrist, then up into his wide, desperate eyes.

"Don't ever touch me again," I said softly. "You signed the papers, Damien. Remember? Legally... that changed days ago."
