Chapter 5 - The Economic Siege

By noon the following day, the financial district was in complete chaos.

Damien stood in his glass office on the top floor of Moretti Tower, watching news reports flash across four television monitors mounted on the wall.

“BREAKING NEWS: MORETTI LOGISTICS SHARES PLUMMET 60% FOLLOWING VANCE GLOBAL’S HOSTILE TAKEOVER OF PORT OPERATIONS…”

“FEDERAL PROBE LAUNCHED INTO MORETTI REAL ESTATE TRUSTS…”

The double doors of his office were slammed open. Don Vincente, the elderly patriarch of the city's ruling mafia council, walked in, flanked by four heavily armed enforcers. Vincente didn't carry a weapon; his presence alone was a death sentence.

"Damien," Vincente said, his voice like grinding stones. "Explain to me why our shipping containers are currently stranded three miles off the coast, surrounded by Coast Guard cutters."

Damien turned around, his hands clenched into tight fists. "It's a temporary legal hold, Don Vincente. Clara triggered an old Vance trust clause. My legal team is filing an emergency injunction as we speak."

"Your legal team?" Vincente spat on the marble floor. "Your lead lawyer, Pendelton, just resigned twenty minutes ago after Vance Global bought out his law firm's partnership debt. You are standing alone, boy."

Damien’s heart hammered against his ribs. "I have the reserves in Zurich—"

"You don't," Vincente growled, tossing a thick folder onto Damien’s desk. "Your little mistress, Chloe, just executed a full confession to the Commission. She stole forty-seven million from our accounts—money you were supposed to be guarding. And even worse... she admitted to conspiring with the Russos to murder your wife."

Damien froze, the blood draining completely from his face. "What?"

"You traded a woman whose family funded our entire political protection grid for a cheap, thieving rat who was selling our routes to our worst enemies," Vincente declared, stepping closer, his old eyes burning with ruthless disappointment. "You let your pride blind you, Damien. You thought you were untouchable."

"Clara... Clara is doing this?" Damien whispered, the reality finally shattering his denial.

"Clara Vance just bought out three of my top lieutenants," Vincente revealed, a dark, bitter smile touching his lips. "She offered them legitimate corporate positions, full legal immunity, and clean security contracts for their families. Half my men have laid down their guns to go work for her. She didn't use bullets, Damien. She used cash, honor, and leverage."

Vincente reached out and patted Damien’s cheek with a heavy, cold hand.

"The Commission is stripping you of your title. As of this moment, you are no longer the head of the Moretti family. You have twenty-four hours to hand over the master keys to the port, or we will hand you to the Russos ourselves."
