Chapter 4 - Unravelling the Betrayal

The penthouse suite of the Grand Regency Hotel was filled with the fragrance of fresh lilies and expensive champagne. Chloe Hayes sat on a velvet sofa, admiring her reflection in a compact mirror as she applied crimson lipstick.
"He's panicking, isn't he?" she asked, not bothering to look up as the door opened. "Damien always panics when he feels cornered. But once the board meets tomorrow, we can use the secondary offshore accounts to—"
"There are no secondary accounts, Chloe," a smooth voice interjected.
Chloe froze. She snapped her mirror shut and turned around.
Standing in the entryway wasn't Damien. It was me, accompanied by two forensic accountants and the chief auditor of the Moretti Commission.
"What are you doing in my room?!" Chloe shrieked, standing up, her hands trembling. "Security! Get this woman out of here!"
"The security staff works for Vance Estates now, Miss Hayes," I said pleasantly, taking a seat on an armchair across from her. "And as for this room... it was booked under Moretti Development Corporation, which means I currently own the bed you're standing next to."
Chloe’s face flushed red with rage. "You think you've won just because you found some loophole in your grandfather's old paperwork? Damien loves me! He signed those divorce papers because he wanted me, not you and those screaming brat babies!"
I didn't lose my temper. I simply gestured to my lead auditor, who stepped forward and opened a thick dossier, laying three financial ledgers on the coffee table.
"Miss Hayes," the auditor said professionally. "Over the past eighteen months, you have transferred approximately forty-seven million dollars from the Moretti Construction slush fund into private accounts in the Cayman Islands under your mother's maiden name."
Chloe’s breath hitched. Her eyes darted toward the door. "That... that's a lie! Damien authorized those transfers!"
"Damien authorized transfers for land acquisitions," I corrected her gently. "He had no idea you were diverting twenty percent of every bribe and construction skim into your own personal escape fund. You weren't helping him escape me, Chloe. You were preparing to abandon him the moment his empire fell apart."
I pulled out a small recorder and placed it on the table.
"Do you know what the Syndicate elders do to someone who steals forty-seven million dollars from their retirement fund?" I asked softly. "Damien is brutal, Chloe. But Don Vincente? Don Vincente skins thieves alive."
Chloe collapsed back onto the sofa, her knees giving out. Tears of terror spilled down her cheeks, ruining her makeup. "Please... please don't tell Vincente. He'll kill me. I'll give it back! I'll give it all back!"
"You will give it back," I agreed, leaning in. "Every single cent will be transferred into a trust fund for my three children. And then, you are going to pick up that phone, call Damien, and tell him the truth about how you fed information to his rival, the Russo family, to ensure my C-section went into emergency complications."
Chloe choked on a sob, her eyes wide with horrified realization that her entire scheme was laid bare.
"Did you really think I wouldn't investigate why my anesthesia monitor failed during surgery?" I whispered, my eyes burning with lethal intent. "You paid the anesthesiologist to delay my revive protocol, hoping I would die on that table so you could step into my shoes."

"I... I didn't mean for you to flatline!" she wept, shaking uncontrollably.
"Call him," I commanded, pushing the phone toward her. "Or Don Vincente gets the financial audit in five minutes."
