Chapter 3 - The Confrontation at Coronado

The following morning, the San Diego sun refused to break through the marine layer, leaving the coast shrouded in a thick, gray fog. Olivia returned to the Coronado house—not to beg, not to argue, but to pack. She had brought two professional movers and an attorney from the Langford firm.

As the movers began packing Olivia’s personal belongings and Ethan's toys into standard boxes, the front door flew open. Andrew walked in, still wearing his service dress whites from the previous day, looking completely disheveled.

"What the hell is this?" Andrew roared, ignoring the attorney and marching straight toward Olivia, who was wrapping a crystal vase in bubble wrap. "Olivia! You are emptying my house?"

"This is my house, Andrew," Olivia said, without looking up. "My grandfather purchased this property in 1994. It is held under the Langford Real Estate Trust. Your name is on the lease as a resident dependent on my family’s goodwill. The lease has been terminated due to a violation of the conduct clause."

Andrew stopped, his chest heaving. He looked at the attorney, Mr. Vance, who merely raised a pair of reading glasses and offered a cold, professional nod.

"You can't do this, Liv. We’re married! Twelve years!" Andrew’s voice cracked. He tried to soften his tone, stepping closer, dropping his arms to his sides in a gesture of vulnerability. "Please. Look at me. I made a mistake. A terrible, stupid mistake. Serena means nothing to me. It was a temporary lapse in judgment. The stress of the upcoming deployment, the pressure of the promotion board..."

"Do not use your service as an excuse for your lack of character," Olivia interrupted, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. She finally looked him in the eye. "A lapse in judgment is forgetting to buy milk, Andrew. Funding your mistress with my family’s foundation money for nearly two years is an organized, calculated betrayal. You didn't just cheat on me. You stole from the veterans we were supposed to be helping."

"I didn't steal anything!" Andrew defended himself hotly. "The grants were allocated for strategic consulting! She provided actionable reports!"

"Reports that NCIS is currently reviewing for plagiarism and inflation of hours," Mr. Vance chimed in smoothly from the corner. "Good morning, Commander. I am Arthur Vance, representing Mrs. Whitaker in the upcoming divorce proceedings. Here are your temporary restraining orders and the preliminary custody filing."

Andrew took the papers mechanically, his hands trembling. "Custody? You’re trying to take Ethan from me?"

"You chose to bring your domestic complications into your place of duty, where our son was present," Olivia said, her voice hardening. "You exposed him to the destruction of your reputation. Until a judge decides otherwise, you will have supervised visitation only on alternating weekends. And that is assuming you aren't residing in a military brig by then."

Andrew looked around the living room, watching his life being dismantled box by box. The awards, the plaques, the photos of him shaking hands with Admirals—the movers weren't touching those. They were leaving them behind like trash on an empty beach.

"You're destroying me," Andrew whispered, a mixture of anger and despair twisting his features. "If my career ends, what happens to Ethan’s future? What happens to the Whitaker name?"

"Ethan’s future is secure because he is a Langford," Olivia said, walking past him toward the front door. "As for the Whitaker name... you should have thought about its value before you dragged it through the mud with Serena Vale."
