Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Deception

Olivia sat in the conference room of Langford Enterprises, surrounded by Marcus, Mr. Vance, and a team of forensic accountants. The walls were covered in digital displays showing flowcharts of financial transactions spanning the last two years.

"It's worse than we thought, Olivia," Marcus said, tapping a stylus against a tablet, highlighting a series of wire transfers. "Andrew wasn't just funding Serena's lifestyle. They were planning a complete exit strategy."

Olivia leaned forward, her eyes narrowing. "An exit strategy?"

"Andrew knew his promotion to Captain was coming up next year," one of the accountants explained. "He was setting up a private maritime defense firm under Serena’s name. The Langford foundation grants weren't just paying for dinners and hotels; they were being used as seed capital to purchase proprietary software and secure government contracts ahead of his retirement from active duty."

"He was using my family's money to build a rival empire while using his military rank to clear the bureaucratic hurdles," Olivia realized, a deep sense of disgust washing over her. "He wanted to leave the Navy, leave me, and step directly into a multi-million dollar corporate life that I inadvertently funded."

"Exactly," Marcus said. "But he made one critical error. He used the foundation’s proprietary server to approve the internal invoices. We have the digital signatures, the IP addresses tracking back to his private laptop, and the text messages coordinating the transfers with Serena."

Mr. Vance smiled, a clinical, predatory expression. "In a standard divorce, this would give us massive leverage. In a military court-martial and a federal fraud investigation, this is what we call an absolute victory. The Navy will not protect a commander who uses charity funds intended for wounded veterans to launch a private corporate enterprise."

Olivia took a deep breath. She looked out the window at the San Diego harbor, where several grey naval vessels were docked. She felt a profound sadness for the institution Andrew had dishonored. The Navy was filled with honorable men and women who sacrificed everything for their country. Andrew had used that sacred uniform as a camouflage for his greed.

"What is the next step, Arthur?" Olivia asked.

"We hand over the full forensic package to the Department of Justice and the Navy Judge Advocate General (JAG)," Mr. Vance replied. "They will take over from here. You won't have to say a word. The evidence speaks for itself."

"And Ethan?"

"Andrew's legal counsel will likely advise him to surrender custody without a fight to avoid these details becoming public record during a bitter trial," Vance said. "He will want to settle quickly to try and minimize his prison sentence."

"Prison," Olivia whispered. It was a heavy word. But as she thought about her son’s innocent face, about the eight-year-old boy who proudly held a thermos of coffee for a father who was busy planning a betrayal, her heart hardened. "Let them proceed."
