Chapter 7 - Isolation and Realization

With his military career destroyed and his legal fees skyrocketing, Andrew found himself living in a cramped, rented apartment in an unfavorable part of San Diego. The Langford lawyers had successfully frozen his joint marital assets, leaving him with only his base pay, which was now heavily docked due to his legal suspension.
Serena Vale had completely vanished from his life, having struck a immunity deal with the federal prosecutors. She had turned over every email, every text message, and every financial ledger that implicated Andrew as the mastermind behind the fraudulent grants. In exchange, she received probation and a heavy fine, leaving Andrew to bear the brunt of the criminal charges alone.
One evening, desperate and completely isolated, Andrew broke his restraining order and called Olivia from a payphone near a local grocery store.
Olivia answered, her voice calm and detached. "Hello?"
"Olivia... please don't hang up," Andrew begged, his voice raspy and broken. "I have nothing left. The lawyers say I’m looking at five to seven years in a federal penitentiary. They’re taking my pension. Everything I worked for my entire life is gone."
"You worked for your own advancement, Andrew," Olivia replied coldly. "You didn't work for your family, and you didn't work for your country. You worked for your own ego."
"I am sorry," he sobbed, the sound pathetic over the crackling line. "I am so sorry, Liv. If I could go back to that Thursday morning... if I could just change everything..."
"The tragedy isn't that you got caught, Andrew. The tragedy is that you were only sorry because you got caught," Olivia said, her voice steady and unyielding. "You would have happily continued using my family’s money, lying to our son, and sleeping with another woman if I hadn't driven to that base. You chose this path. Now you have to walk it."
"Can I at least see Ethan? One last time before the trial?"
May you like
Olivia stayed silent for a long moment. "Ethan knows you are away on a long, difficult mission to fix your mistakes. I will not let him see you in a courtroom, and I will not let him visit you in a prison. When he is old enough to understand the truth, he can make his own choice. Goodbye, Andrew."
She ended the call, blocking the number instantly. She stood on her balcony, looking out over the Pacific Ocean, feeling the last remaining threads of her old life finally snap. She was no longer Commander Whitaker's wife. She was Olivia Langford, a woman who had reclaimed her destiny.
