Chapter 6 - The Fall of Commander Whitaker

Three weeks later, the hammer fell.
It was a crisp Tuesday morning when two federal agents and a representative from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service walked into the administration building of Naval Support Unit Coronado. They didn't use the back entrance; they walked right through the front doors, past the young guard, Harris, who stood at attention with a stoic expression.
Andrew was in the middle of a briefing with his department heads when the door opened. The base commander, Captain Reynolds, walked in, flanked by the investigators.
"Commander Whitaker," Captain Reynolds said, his voice echoing with absolute disappointment. "Step away from the podium. You are being relieved of your command for cause, effective immediately."
The room went dead silent. Andrew’s junior officers stared at their desks, refusing to make eye contact with their disgraced leader.
"Sir, there must be a mistake..." Andrew began, his face draining of color.
"There is no mistake, Commander," the NCIS agent said, stepping forward and producing a warrant. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and conduct unbecoming an officer under Article 133 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Please surrender your sidearm and step forward."
Andrew’s hands shook as he unbuckled his utility belt. The humiliation was absolute, public, and permanent. As he was led down the hallway in handcuffs, he passed the windows overlooking the parking lot—the same windows where he had stood with Serena just weeks before, laughing at the world.
That afternoon, the Pentagon issued a brief press release announcing the reassignment and ongoing investigation of a senior officer at Coronado due to financial irregularities. The name Whitaker was officially stripped of its prestige.
In her La Jolla home, Olivia watched the news report with a quiet solemnity. There was no joy in seeing the father of her child ruined, but there was a profound sense of justice. She turned off the television as Ethan ran into the room, holding a drawing of a sailboat he had made at his new private school.
"Look, Mom! I drew the boat Uncle Marcus has!" Ethan said proudly.
"It’s beautiful, sweetie," Olivia said, pulling him into a warm hug. "Do you want to go down to the docks and see the real ones this weekend?"

"Yes! Can we bring hot cocoa this time?"
"Absolutely," Olivia smiled, kissing his forehead. "As much hot cocoa as you want."
