Chapter 1 - The Cold Room of Truth

The fluorescent lights in the private investigator’s office hummed like a swarm of angry hornets. The air tasted stale, heavy with the scent of old paper, cheap coffee, and the terrifying rot of a year-long deception. I stood frozen over the mahogany desk, my fingers trembling so violently that the edge of the birth certificates crumpled beneath my grip.

“If Rowan ever learns the truth, make sure he never finds out what happened to the third baby.”

The words, scribbled in Claire’s elegant, unmistakable cursive, burned into my retina. A third baby. Triplets. Megan hadn't just given birth to twins on that deserted stretch of road outside Franklin; she had carried a third child. A child that was entirely missing from the records.

I slowly looked up at Marcus Vance, the private investigator I had paid half a million dollars to look into my ex-wife’s alleged infidelity a year ago. Marcus was a former detective, a man who prided himself on his ironclad reputation. Right now, he looked like a man standing before a firing squad. His collar was damp with sweat, and his hands were shoved deep into his pockets to hide their shaking.

"Rowan..." Marcus began, his voice cracking like dry timber. "You have to understand the position I was in. The Whitmore family... they own half the judicial contracts in this state. Claire didn't just offer me money. She threatened my daughter's medical license. She had me cornered."

I didn't yell. I didn't smash the glass desk. The rage inside me was too vast, too absolute for simple violence. It was an icy, crushing weight that completely replaced the air in my lungs.

"Where is the third child, Marcus?" I asked, my voice a deadly, low whisper that made him flinch.

"I don't know!" he stammered, raising his hands in defense. "I swear to you, Rowan, I don't know! Claire handled that part entirely on her own. My only job was to fabricate the hotel photos, route the fake bank transfers from your corporate account to that shell company, and plant your grandmother's diamond necklace in Megan’s closet before the police arrived. The note... I found that note in a courier bag she sent to my house six months ago. I kept it as insurance. In case she ever tried to turn on me."

I reached across the desk, grabbed Marcus by his silk tie, and pulled him forward until his terrified face was inches from mine. "You destroyed my life. You helped a sociopath throw my pregnant wife into the street. You took my money to ensure my own flesh and blood starved on the side of a highway."

"I’m sorry, Rowan! I’m so sorry!" he choked out.

"Sorry doesn't fix this," I hissed, releasing him so hard he fell back into his leather chair. I grabbed the entire file, stuffing the birth certificates, the fabricated photos, and Claire’s handwritten note into my leather briefcase. "You are going to help me dismantle Claire Whitmore piece by piece. If you hesitate, if you warn her, or if you attempt to leave this city, I will use every billion-dollar resource at my disposal to ensure you spend the rest of your miserable life in a maximum-security prison. Do you understand me?"

Marcus nodded frantically, his face pale. "Anything. I’ll do anything."

I turned and walked out of the office, the heavy glass door slamming behind me. As I stepped into the humid Tennessee night, the image of Megan walking down that deserted road flashed through my mind. I had seen her just two hours ago. I had let my fiancée mock her. I had watched a twenty-dollar bill float into the dirt at her feet while she looked at me with nothing but pity.

She wasn't pitying herself. She was pitying me. Because she knew I was sleeping in the bed of the monster who had stolen our family.

I got into my car, my hands gripping the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white. I didn't drive back to the multi-million-dollar estate I shared with Claire. Instead, I turned the vehicle back toward the rural roads of Franklin. I had to find my wife. I had to find my children.
