Chapter 12 - The Invisible Syndicate

By nightfall, the farmhouse was locked down under enhanced security. The foundation’s lead counsel, Maya Vance (no relation to the prosecutor), sat in Rowan’s study surrounded by stacks of financial ledgers.
"It’s a orchestrated hit, Rowan," Maya explained, sliding a corporate flowchart across the mahogany desk. "Claire didn't act alone before her bankruptcy. Before she fled to Europe, she sold her remaining debt notes to a shadow holding company called Aegis Capital. Aegis is backed by Arthur Harrison Jr.—the disgraced judge’s eldest son."
Megan poured tea for everyone, sitting beside Rowan. "So Arthur Jr. is using his father’s old connections in the District Attorney’s office to freeze our foundation."
"Exactly," Maya nodded. "If Aegis succeeds in getting a temporary restraining order on the foundation’s accounts, all funding for the women’s shelters, the legal aid clinic, and your estate’s operating expenses will stop instantly. They want to starve you into a settlement where you relinquish your evidence against the remaining corrupt judges in Tennessee."
Rowan leaned back in his leather chair, staring at the chart.
"Claire thought twenty dollars could buy a human soul," Rowan said quietly. "Her handlers think money can buy justice back from the dead. They're about to learn that some men don't sell."

"What’s our move?" Megan asked, her eyes burning with newfound resolve. She was no longer the frightened woman who had suffered in silence; she was a mother fighting for her children’s home.
"We don't fight them in a quiet courtroom," Rowan declared. "We go on the offense. We expose Arthur Harrison Jr. and every politician on Aegis’s payroll before the judge signs that freeze order."
