Chapter 3 - The Alliance of the Damned

The morning sun began to pierce through the fog of Franklin as I guided Megan and the twins into the secure, private elevator of my downtown Nashville penthouse. It was a property Claire didn't have access to—a secondary asset I kept under a corporate holding name.

The twins, whom Megan had named Leo and Arthur, were finally awake. They had my eyes—the bright, piercing blue that my grandmother used to say belonged to explorers. As I held Leo in my arms, his tiny fingers wrapping around my thumb, a fierce, protective instinct solidified within my soul. I had spent a year being a fool. I would spend the rest of my life being their shield.

Megan sat on the plush white sofa, a mug of hot tea between her hands. She looked entirely out of place in the ultra-modern luxury space, yet she was the only thing that gave the room any real gravity.

"We can't just go to the police yet," Megan said, her voice weary but sharp. "Claire’s father is Judge Arthur Whitmore. He controls the circuit court. If we try to file criminal charges here, the paperwork will vanish before the ink dries, and Claire will find a way to hide the third baby forever."

"She won't get the chance," I said, sitting across from her. I opened my laptop and dialed Arthur Vance, the asset-protection attorney who had helped my family for generations. "We aren't going through the local courts. We’re going to hit Claire where she breathes—her social standing, her fortune, and her vanity. In exactly three weeks, we are supposed to stand in front of five hundred of the most powerful people in Tennessee for our wedding. That wedding is going to become her execution."

Arthur Vance’s face appeared on the screen. He looked grave. "Rowan, I’ve reviewed the files you forwarded from Marcus’s office. The evidence of fraud and extortion is substantial, but the adoption waiver Megan signed is a massive legal hurdle. Because it was signed under a state-sanctioned medical facility, it was processed through a private agency called 'Heavenly Blessings'—a non-profit heavily funded by the Whitmore Foundation."

"Can we trace the placement?" I demanded.

"Not legally without a federal subpoena," Arthur sighed. "But Marcus Vance might have a backdoor. He was the one routing Claire’s payments. If she paid the agency to look the other way, there will be a financial trail."

I turned to Megan, my eyes fierce. "I’m going back to the estate today. I have to act like nothing has changed. I have to let Claire believe she is still winning until the trap snaps shut."

Megan looked at me, her fingers tightening around her mug. "Can you do that, Rowan? Can you look at the woman who stole your child and smile at her?"

"I won't just smile at her, Megan," I said, my voice dropping into a dark, chilling register. "I’m going to make her believe she’s about to have everything she ever wanted. And then I’m going to take it all away."
