Chapter 11 - The Shadows of the Past

The tranquility of the Franklin farmhouse was interrupted on a bright Tuesday morning by the sharp crunch of tires against the gravel driveway.

Rowan stood on the back deck, a mug of coffee resting in his hand, watching the white sedan stop near the perimeter gate. Beside him, Megan’s smile slowly faded as she recognized the emblem on the car door: District Attorney’s Office – Special Investigations Division.

Two investigators stepped out, led by a sharp-featured woman in a charcoal suit. Her name was Special Prosecutor Vance, a aggressive attorney known for high-profile white-collar prosecutions.

"Rowan Bellamy?" Prosecutor Vance asked, standing outside the security fence as Rowan walked down the wooden steps.

"I am Rowan Bellamy," Rowan replied coldly. "You're on private property."

"We're here to execute an administrative subpoena regarding the liquidations that funded the Celeste Bellamy Foundation," Vance said, pulling a folded legal document from her briefcase. "A formal petition was filed yesterday by the estate executors of the late Judge Harrison and Claire’s trust attorneys. They allege that fifty million dollars in corporate assets transferred into your foundation were acquired through fraudulent liquidation while legal claims against your former firm were still pending."

Megan stepped down to Rowan’s side, her hand slipping into his. Her knuckles were white, but her gaze was steady.

"Claire lost her civil suits six months ago," Megan said, her voice trembling slightly with anger. "The courts dismissed all her counter-claims with prejudice."

"Civil courts, Mrs. Bellamy," Vance corrected with a thin, icy smile. "This is a criminal inquiry into asset shielding and judicial bribery allegations made by surviving members of the Harrison syndicate. If these foundation funds are linked to encumbered assets, every cent will be frozen by midnight—and custody reviews for dependants funded by contested assets will commence immediately."

The threat was clear, brutal, and targeted directly at their family. They weren't just coming for Rowan's fortune; they were threatening the triplets’ peaceful sanctuary.

"Get off my land, Vance," Rowan said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low whisper. "You have your subpoena. Now take your circus back to Nashville before I file a federal harassment injunction against your office."

As Vance’s sedan backed down the driveway, Rowan turned to Megan.

"They think they can use the ghost of Claire's syndicate to tear us down," Rowan murmured, pulling Megan close as little Leo’s cheerful giggles echoed from the back deck. "They don't know who they're dealing with."
