Chapter 6 - The Confession of Maya Lin

Three weeks later.
The high-security visitation wing of the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility was quiet, save for the rhythmic footsteps of the guards and the clink of metal keys.
I sat on one side of a thick glass partition, wearing a dark navy blazer.
On the other side sat Maya Lin.
Her long, beautiful hair had been chopped short into a rough bob, her pale face completely devoid of makeup. She wore an orange prison jumpsuit, her slender wrists bound in steel handcuffs.
She refused to look me in the eye, staring down at her cuffed hands resting on the stainless steel counter.
"Why did you ask to see me, Maya?" I asked, my voice calm through the small plastic intercom speaker.
Maya swallowed hard, a trembling tear running down her hollow cheek.
"I wanted to tell you..." Maya whispered, her voice cracking. "I wanted to tell you that I'm sorry, Sabrina. For everything."
"I don't need your apology, Maya," I said coldly. "You helped Kenneth destroy my marriage, you helped my father steal from our family, and you tried to leave Justin penniless while you ran off to Dubai."
"I was terrified!" Maya cried out, pressing her cuffed hands against the glass. "Kenneth told me three years ago that if I didn't help him set up the offshore accounts, he would tell Justin about... about the mistake I made in college!"
I narrowed my eyes slightly. "What mistake?"
Maya closed her eyes, sobbing quietly. "Before I met Justin... I was deep in credit card debt. Kenneth found out about it through his private bank network. He paid off my sixty thousand dollar debt, but he made me sign a promissory note. He held it over my head for five years, Sabrina! He used me!"
I looked at my former sister-in-law. A small part of me felt a faint flicker of pity for how easily Kenneth had manipulated her weak, desperate nature, but the anger inside me far outweighed it.
"You had a choice, Maya," I told her firmly. "You could have come to Justin. You could have come to me. Justin loved you more than his own life. He would have paid your debt in a heartbeat."
"I was too ashamed..." Maya wept. "I thought if Justin knew I wasn't the perfect, wealthy girl he thought I was, he would leave me."
"And now you're sitting in a federal prison cell facing eight years for fraud," I said softly. "Was your pride worth it?"
Maya lowered her head, weeping bitterly, unable to answer.
"Justin has filed for an annulment," I added, stepping back from the glass. "He is selling the house in Boulder, and he is moving to London next month to manage our European operations. He never wants to see your face again."
I picked up my leather handbag and stood up from the stool.
May you like
"Goodbye, Maya."
I turned my back on her weeping figure and walked out into the afternoon sun.
