Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary

Silence stretched across the presidential suite, heavy with the weight of unshed tears and unsaid truths. I lowered the hotel desk phone back onto its base, the metallic click echoing like a gavel. Anna flinched, instinctively stepping between me and the bed where her children slept.
"I am not calling security," I said, my voice softer than any tone I had used in this building for a decade. "And you are not leaving tonight."
Anna’s eyes widened in disbelief. "Mr. Vance, I violated company policy. I brought unauthorized guests into an executive suite—"

"You gave your children a roof when they had none," I interrupted, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline. Below us, neon lights blurred into streams of gold and red, a stark reminder of the unforgiving metropolis. "I don't fire mothers for surviving. Tomorrow morning, my personal assistant will secure a corporate apartment for you and the twins. You will stay here tonight, undisturbed."
She covered her face with her hands, her shoulders trembling as quiet sobs finally escaped. I stepped out into the hallway, pulling the heavy oak door shut until it clicked securely. In the quiet corridor, I leaned against the wall and closed my eyes. The image of the little boy clutching his faded elephant flashed in my mind, pulling me straight back to thirty years ago—to a cramped room behind a hotel laundry facility where my mother hid my brother and me while she scrubbed linoleum on her hands and knees.
