Chapter 5 - A Fragile Truce

I drove directly to Anna’s apartment, the legal documents sitting heavy on the passenger seat. When she opened the door, her welcoming smile faded at the sight of my grim expression.
"Is something wrong, Julian?" she asked.
"Who hired you at the Wellington Grand?" I asked directly, stepping inside.
Her face went pale. "I applied through the standard agency—"
"The board claims you were planted by Apex Properties," I said, watching her every micro-expression. "They are threatening to file criminal charges against you for corporate interference."

Anna staggered back, her hand flying to her mouth. "No! Julian, I swear on my children's lives, I had no idea! My sister worked for Apex as an administrative clerk before she passed away last year. She left me her savings, but Apex froze her accounts claiming contractual breach. That's why I went broke! That's why we were evicted!"
The missing puzzle pieces clicked into place. Anna wasn't a spy; she was a victim of the exact corruption I was trying to unearth.
