Chapter 5 - The Snake's Poison

Tone: Psychological thriller, High tension.

Key Focus: A psychological game; Jason making contact; the discovery of Chelsea’s fate.

The escape of Jason Sullivan shifted the paradigm of our existence. We were no longer just hiding; we were waiting for an inevitable confrontation.

Two days after the news of Jason’s escape, the satellite radio buzzed to life again. But this time, it wasn't Sarah’s voice that came through the speaker.

It was a voice that had haunted my dreams for years. Smooth, arrogant, and dripping with artificial charm.

"Clara? Are you there, darling?"

I froze. My father lunged for the radio, but I held up a hand, stopping him. I took a deep breath, channelled every ounce of strength I had, and picked up the receiver.

"Jason," I said, my voice dead and emotionless.

A soft, mocking laugh came through the static. "I knew you'd answer. You always were so predictable, Clara. I must say, this rustic lifestyle doesn't suit you. I saw the photos. You're looking a bit ragged."

"What do you want, Jason?"

"Oh, come now, don't be like that. We're still family, aren't we? You have my daughter. You have my house. You have my money. I just want what's mine."

"The money is gone. The house is gone. And Lily is not your daughter—she is mine. You forfeited that right the moment you tried to destroy us."

"The money isn't gone, Clara," Jason’s voice lost its playful tone, replaced by a sharp, jagged edge of malice. "The five million in the Cayman account is still there. All I need is your signature on the release authorization. You do that, and I disappear. You'll never see me again. I’ll let you keep the crumbs the government left you."

"And if I don't?"

There was a long pause on the other end. The static hummed like a nest of hornets.

"Do you remember Chelsea?" Jason asked softly.

I frowned. "She’s in prison."

"She was," Jason whispered. "But Chelsea was weak. She started talking to the feds. She was going to cut a deal to testify against Sterling and me to get her sentence reduced. Sterling couldn't have that. She had an... accident in the showers yesterday. A tragic slip and fall. She didn't survive, Clara."

A wave of nausea washed over me. Chelsea Vance, the woman who had tried to steal my husband, who had painted Homewrecker on my walls, who had tried to ruin my life... was dead. Murdered by the very monsters she had aligned herself with.

"I’d hate for something similar to happen to your father," Jason continued, his voice cold and clinical. "Or to little Lily. She’s such a beautiful baby. It would be a shame if she didn't live to see her first birthday."

"If you touch her, Jason, I will kill you myself," I snarled, the raw power of my voice surprising even my father.

"You don't have it in you, Clara. You're a victim. You're a soft, fragile little girl. Meet me at the old lumber mill on the north border of the park tomorrow at noon. Bring the signed authorization. Just you. If I see your father, or a single cop, the cabin you’re hiding in will become your tomb. I know exactly where you are."

The line went dead.

My father looked at me, his eyes wide with concern. "He's bluffing about knowing the exact location. If he knew, he would have attacked already. He's trying to draw us out."

May you like

"He knows we're in the Adirondacks," I said, my mind racing. "It's only a matter of time before his scouts find this cabin. We can't run anymore, Dad. This is where we make our stand."

"The lumber mill is a trap," my father said. "But it's a trap we can use."
