Chapter 5 - The Corporate Bleeding

The next morning, the corporate headquarters of Sullivan Logistics looked like a war zone.
Jason had been forced to stay in the house under police supervision overnight while his electronic devices were cloned. By 9:00 AM, when he finally arrived at his office penthouse, hoping to manage the damage and suppress the story before the board of directors found out, he found the doors to the building locked.
Standing outside the glass glass facade were two federal Marshals, accompanied by agents from the Internal Revenue Service and the state forensic audit unit.
"Mr. Sullivan," an agent said, stepping forward. "We are executing a federal seizure of all corporate servers and financial accounts related to Sullivan Logistics."
"On what grounds?!" Jason screamed, his corporate composure completely shattered. "This is an illegal intrusion! My lawyers will have your jobs!"
"The grounds are corporate embezzlement and fraud," the agent replied, handing him a sealed federal warrant. "A preliminary review of your assistant Chelsea Vance's financial records—obtained during her arrest last night—shows that her luxury apartment, her designer vehicles, and her multi-thousand dollar credit cards were all funded directly through a shell company registered under your logistics firm. You used corporate investor funds to finance your mistress, Mr. Sullivan. That’s not a domestic dispute. That’s grand larceny and corporate fraud."
Inside the building, the board of directors was already holding an emergency closed-door meeting. The multi-million dollar merger that Jason had spent three years negotiating was cancelled within minutes. The international investors, terrified of the reputational damage of being associated with a CEO whose mistress vandalized a pregnant woman's car seat—and who happened to be the Commissioner's daughter—pulled their funding entirely.
Jason stood on the sidewalk, watching his empire evaporate under the bright morning sun. His phone was ringing incessantly with texts from his lawyers, his board members, and his bank managers, all informing him that his personal assets were being frozen pending a full criminal investigation.
He had tried to protect his business at the expense of his wife and child. Now, because of his arrogance, he had lost both.
I watched the news from the comfort of my father's beautiful, secure home in the hills. My father sat across from me at the kitchen table, pouring me a cup of herbal tea, his face soft and loving as he looked at me.
"Are you doing okay, sweetheart?" he asked gently.
May you like
"I am, Dad," I said, taking a sip of the warm tea. "For the first time in a year, I can actually breathe. I don't have to wonder what he's doing anymore. The truth is out."
"The truth is a powerful weapon, Clara," my father said, his eyes turning sharp. "But we’ve only just begun to use it. The civil and criminal courts open next month. They think they’ve seen the worst of it, but they have no idea what happens when the state brings its full weight down."
