Chapter 7 - The Gathering of the Wolves

The morning of the high-profile court hearing arrived. The steps of the state supreme courthouse were absolutely swarming with journalists, camera crews, and members of the public. The "Logistics Mistress Case" had become the biggest scandal of the year, drawing national attention.

Jason arrived first, wearing a tailored navy suit, looking thin and exhausted, but projecting an air of solemn dignity. His lawyer, Marcus Sterling, walked beside him, smiling confidently at the cameras, giving short interviews about "exposing the truth behind political overreach."

Chelsea was brought in next from the holding van, her hands and feet chained, escorted by four guards. Even in chains, she carried her head with a delusional defiance, glaring at the reporters as if she were a political prisoner rather than a convicted vandal.

I arrived last. I was now nearly eight months pregnant, my belly prominent beneath a beautiful, elegant navy blue maternity dress. I walked flanked by my father, who wore his full dress uniform, his medals glinting under the courtroom lights, and my attorney Arthur Pendelton. We didn't stop for the cameras. We didn't give interviews. We walked straight into the temple of justice.

The courtroom was packed to absolute capacity. The gallery was filled with city council members, corporate executives, and journalists who had managed to secure a seat.

Judge Martha Higgins, a legendary, no-nonsense jurist known for her strict adherence to the law and her intolerance for courtroom theater, slammed her gavel down to bring the session to order.

"This is a combined preliminary hearing regarding the criminal charges against Chelsea Vance, the corporate fraud indictments against Jason Sullivan, and the contested civil protective orders filed by Clara Sullivan," Judge Higgins announced, her sharp eyes scanning the room. "Counsel, state your appearances."

Arthur Pendelton stood up for our side. "Arthur Pendelton, representing the plaintiff, Clara Sullivan. We are prepared to show absolute proof of a targeted, malicious campaign of stalking, destruction, and endangerment."

Marcus Sterling stood up for the defense, his voice booming with theatrical confidence. "Marcus Sterling, representing the defense. Your Honor, we are prepared to show that this entire case is a monstrous exaggeration born out of a bitter woman's jealousy, executed through the weaponization of the police department by a corrupt Commissioner who is trying to steal my client's multi-million dollar corporation."

A murmur ran through the crowd. Jason nodded solemnly from the defense table. Chelsea smirked from her seat.

They truly believed their lie was big enough to save them. They truly believed they could control the narrative.
