"Where is Lily?" Jason demanded, his eyes scanning the empty space behind me. "I told you to bring her."
"I’m not a fool, Jason," I said, letting a sob escape my throat as I clutched the manila envelope to my chest. "She’s safe. Far away from here. You get the money, and you leave us alone. That was the deal."
"The deal is whatever I say it is!" Jason snapped, taking a step forward. He looked incredibly unstable, his hand shaking slightly as he pointed the gun at my chest. "Do you have any idea what I’ve been through? Sleeping in motels, eating garbage, running from the feds? All because of you! Because you couldn't just keep your mouth shut and let me handle my business!"
"Your business was destroying lives, Jason. You tried to frame me. You tried to take my baby."
"She’s my baby too!" he screamed, his voice cracking. "She is my legacy! My blood! And you took her from me!"
"She will never know your name," I said, my voice dropping its trembling act, becoming ice-cold.
Jason blinked, startled by the sudden change in my demeanor. "What did you say?"
"I said, she will never know your name. To her, you will just be a shadow of a monster her mother defeated."
Jason’s face contorted with rage. He raised the gun, aiming it directly at my forehead. "You arrogant bitch. I’ll kill you and find her myself."
"I wouldn't do that, Jason," a smooth, cultured voice echoed from the catwalk above.
Arthur Sterling stepped out from the metal walkway overlooking the kiln. He was dressed in a pristine wool coat, looking entirely out of place in the derelict mill. Behind him were two burly men carrying submachine guns.
"Sterling," Jason looked up, confused. "What are you doing? We agreed she signs, then we leave."
"We agreed I leave, Jason," Sterling said, a cold, patronizing smile on his face. "You are a liability. You’re unstable, you’re loud, and the FBI is tracking you like a bloodhound. Did you really think I was going to share five million dollars with a disgraced corporate fraudster who can't even control his own wife?"
Jason’s jaw dropped. "You betrayed me?"
"I survived, Jason," Sterling corrected. He looked down at me. "Mrs. Sullivan, or rather, Clara. I have no personal animosity toward you. Hand over the signed authorization, and I will let you and your child live. I will even take care of your husband for you."
Jason screamed in rage and turned his gun toward the catwalk, firing wildly.
Crack! Crack!
Sterling’s men instantly returned fire. A hail of bullets erupted from the catwalk, tearing through the wooden stacks.
I didn't hesitate. The moment the first shot fired, I bolted behind a massive concrete pillar, drawing my 9mm pistol.
Boom!
A high-powered rifle shot echoed from the rafters. One of Sterling’s armed guards on the catwalk gasped, his weapon flying from his hands as he fell over the railing, crashing onto the concrete floor below.

My father had found his mark.
"Sniper!" Sterling screamed, ducking behind the metal plates of the catwalk. "Kill them all! Burn the place down!"
