Chapter 6 - The Strategy of the Scorned

Three weeks passed, and the drama only intensified. Chelsea Vance had been denied bail, classified as a flight risk and a dangerous stalker due to the nature of the messages she had left on my vehicle. She was sitting in a county jail cell, her expensive lifestyle replaced by orange scrubs and cold cafeteria food.
Jason, desperately trying to save himself from a lengthy prison sentence for corporate fraud, hired the most cutthroat divorce and criminal defense attorney in the state—a man named Marcus Sterling.
Marcus was famous for using dirty, underhanded tactics to smear the character of victims, making them look unstable or manipulative to secure lighter sentences for his wealthy clients.
One afternoon, my attorney, a brilliant property and civil rights specialist named Arthur Pendelton, called me into his office. My father came with me, sitting in the corner like a silent guardian.
"Clara," Arthur said, sliding a folder across the desk. "Marcus Sterling just filed their initial defense strategy for the upcoming combined civil and criminal hearing. They are going to try a very ugly, very desperate angle."
I opened the folder. Jason and Chelsea’s legal teams had joined forces. Their defense claimed that I had known about the affair for months and had deliberately orchestrated a "psychological trap" to drive Chelsea into a state of temporary insanity. They were claiming that I had vandalized my own car or allowed Chelsea into the garage to create a high-profile scandal, using my father's political influence to destroy Jason’s company so I could claim the entire corporate fortune in a divorce settlement.
They had even managed to find a disgruntled former cleaning lady from our house who had signed an affidavit claiming I was "jealous, prone to fits of rage, and had threatened to ruin Jason's life using the police department."
"They're labeling me the mastermind," I whispered, a cold, ironic smile spreading across my face. "They're trying to turn the victim into the villain."
"It's a classic gaslighting defense, Clara," Arthur said. "They think that by attacking the Commissioner's office as 'corrupt and biased,' they can create enough reasonable doubt to get the felony charges reduced to simple property damage. They think if they scream loud enough in public, the media will turn on us."

My father stood up from his chair, his tall, powerful frame casting a long shadow across the office. He walked over to the desk, adjusted his uniform jacket, and looked down at the paperwork.
"Let them try," my father said, his voice dropping into that terrifyingly calm register. "Marcus Sterling thinks he knows how to play the system. He forgets that I built the system in this city. We aren't going to fight this in the media, Arthur. We are going to let them present their entire lie in court. We are going to let them dig their own graves under oath. Because what they don't know is that we have the one piece of evidence that turns their entire strategy into perjury."
