Chapter 2 - The Cracks in the Sanctuary

The transformation of the farmhouse from a home back into a fortress was a silent, agonizing process. Dominic didn't say a word as he unsealed the hidden floorboards in the old red barn, retrieving the heavy tactical gear and the black-market firearms he had sworn never to touch again. Every clink of metal against metal felt like a betrayal of the life they had started to build.
Megan sat at the kitchen table, her laptop open, her fingers flying across the keys as she monitored the digital footprint of the Toronto consortium. The "medical research" group was called Vanguard Helix, a multi-national conglomerate with deep ties to Eastern European syndicates. They had used the waterfront property as a money-laundering hub, and Leo’s audits had frozen over four billion dollars of their liquid assets.
"They aren't coming with an army," Megan analyzed, her voice tight as Dominic entered the kitchen, smelling of gun oil and old leather. "An army draws the FBI, and Vanguard wants their money back quietly. They’ll send specialists. Cleaners."
Dominic walked over, placing his large, scarred hand over hers, stopping her frantic typing. "Look at me, Megan."
She looked up, her blue eyes bright with a mixture of fear and fury.

"We are not the people we were in Boston," Dominic said softly, his thumb tracing her cheekbone. "Then, we were fighting to survive. Now, we are fighting to protect her. I will burn the entire Midwest to the ground before I let anyone cross that fence line."
But the psychological toll was immediate. Clara sensed the tension, crying through the night, her high, clear giggles replaced by fussy whimpers. Dominic spent the night hours pacing the perimeter, a silhouette against the moonlit orchard, while Megan lay awake in the master bedroom, a loaded Walther PPK beneath her pillow, realizing that the "clear ledger" was an illusion. The past was a debt that collected interest.
